    Cat gas

My little kitty always smells quite rank. She has had diarrhea on and off as well. I have brought her to the vet and we have dewormed her and also given her medicine to kill a whole bunch of other bacteria. This has been going on since I got her. And she seems healthy and happy enough, but I worry about her. The other day I also noticed (and this is gross) that her anus seemed a bit swollen. Anyone know what could be going on?

When Spunk was little, her farts could clear a room, too! The protruding rectum should be watched closely; it usually comes from straining and diarrhea, and it can lead to rectal prolapse. If you can't find the cause of the diarrhea, maybe the vet would let the baby have a little Immodium to at least slow things down; a prolapsed rectum can sometimes lead to surgical repair.

You could try adding a bit of rice to her food, that helps with diarrhea, too. Keep an eye on things and get to the vet if things don't improve.

What kind of food are you feeding her? No-name brands sometimes aren't the best, they have a lot of filler.

I use a vet food because my one cat had a urinary infection...and it lasts longer because my boys eat less!

Just a thought. Some pumpkin added to the diet (1 tsp), and even some plain yogurt, if she likes it, might help.

I have brought her to the vet about the diarhea and the vet was unable to find anything wrong. She did mention that is unusual for cats to have gas. She did give me some special food to feed her for a while that wouldn't irritate her digestive system. I am not really sure if it made a difference, she has just always had soft stools.

I am currently feeding her friskies. Which is probably the crappiest food at the store. Perhaps I will switch her over to something less crappy on a permanent basis.

If I find that it is not food causing diarrhea/gas what else could it be? Do you know of any potentially serious problems that could cause this?

My baby Panther used to have the runs all the time until I switched his food. It could very well be something in the Friskies that is upsetting your cat's digestive system. Have you looked into switchng foods on a more permanent basis?

Also, I have used in the past Eagle Pack Holistic Transition which is a dry powder that is sprinkled onto the cat food which helps with the runs and other digestive troubles.

I hope your baby feels better.

Ask the vet if it might be a food allergy.

    Discovered cause!

Although Jezebelle has had diarrhea on and off since I first found her, the gas was a new developement and I thought her digestive issues might be getting worse. However, I have now discovered what was causing this problem. A little while ago my roommate had pizza and left the leftovers sitting on the table in a box overnight. The cats had dragged one piece of it out of the box and I had found it on the table and thrown it out. I didn't know that they had actually taken another piece of pizza from the box and hidden it and they had been slowly chewing away at it for days and making themselves sick (it's gone now, I threw it out)! Since I threw the piece of pizza out the gas has gone away. I continue to tackle Jezebelles digestive issues, but at least they're not getting worse, as the gas suggested.

I'm sorry, but this is a funny thread - kitty farts. Heeheehee.

I'm glad you found the problem to your kitty's gas issues. I can't believe they've been eating pizza! Those little devils!

I remember when Cosmo was laying on the kitchen floor and he let out one giant fart. Scared the crap out of me. And what did he do, he looked at me (like I did it).
