NylaBone- Hazordous!

As i was watching a report on the news., i searched the net and found this... http://www.avago.com/rambo/

I suggest anyone who gives your dog a nylabone to stop... They had a ugy on the news with a dog with the name of Chancey who almost died because of it, it caused some kind of blockage in the dogs stomache.

Hi,
I watched a program (20/20 or dateline or something along those lines) many months ago about nylabones. They also reported that they do get blockages and people end up losing their dogs or spending $$$$$ getting the blockage removed.
I was in our local pet store looking for something to give to Presley because she was teething badly and needed something to chew on. The man said to use nylabones so i told him about the report i watched. He said it was probably rawhide or pigs ears i was thinking and i said Nope. rawhide and pigs ears go very soft when broken off.. Nylabones stay hard...
needless to say Presley has a nylabone but she has never touched it. She has had 3 large raw hides which she loves but only chews on them about once or twice a week.. pigs ears she has had many but the vet told me they are loaded with salt and not to give them to her...


Actually i have one more question.. There are these bone things you can buy that are banana,liver,cheese,potato,chicken all sorts of flavors and they are suppost to break down. Does anyone use them? Are they safe?

Presley if you are referring to Booda bones, yes I have used them. I believe they are made mostly with corn starch and are supposed to be harmless. Although I don't give them to Bella often, when I do she really enjoys them. Gee, there are so many toys and treats to be careful of. It takes the joy out of a trip to PetsMart!

Angus & Roxey have never liked the nyla-bones, now I'm glad! And once I gave Roxey and Angus a bone, it was kinda crunchy and was supposed to have carrots & such in it, maby that is the one you are thinking of Melissa, I'm not sure, but I gave them one ONCE and that was it, it gave them both the runs! But they did really like it! I guess too much veggies or something?

Oh my God! That's all Fritz chews on. That's the only toy he likes. What else should I get? Anything stuffed lasts about 30 seconds

The report is actually for Gumabone which is manufactured by the NYLABONE people. Gumabones are softer than the harder Nylabone product.

If you make sure it is a super hard original Nylabone, you should be OK. Gumabones are softer and break off in large pieces which the dog ingests and has a hard time passing because they don't break down.

The only thing I think you need to be leary of in the original Nylabone is that they are sooooo hard, the dog can actually wear down teeth or crack a tooth.

Kia had a nylabone but I saw the program too and promptly threw it away. She rarely touched it anyway.

The hard nylabones can also be broken off in chunks - my dogs have thrown up several bits of it after chewing on them.

Also, one of my dogs broke a tooth, either on a hard nylabone or a cow hoof. We discussed the issue with our vet, who feels strongly that the hard nylabones should be banned from the market, as they are hard as rock and often break dogs' teeth. If your dog is AT ALL an aggressive chewer, hard nylabones are not good for them.

I use the regular, liver-flavored nylabone gum-a-bones for my aggressive chewers - always supervised. If they chew a piece off, I take the piece from them and throw it away. They have to have SOMETHING to chew on, and hard nylabones are too hard, booda bones and nylabone fruit/veggie bones are gone in mere minutes, rawhide is not safe in large quantities, and galileo bones and sterlized bones are also much much too hard.

I give nylabone gum-a-bones, the occasional rawhide chip and raw beef knuckle bones (never cooked/boiled, because cooked bones become too hard, and too brittle -they can splinter and get stuck in dogs' intestinal tracts). My dogs need something to chew on, by nature, so I feel that these are the safest options, after much research and discussion with animal experts.

Every negative nylabone report I've ever read seemed to be associated with the nylabone dental bones - 'dental dinosaurs,' etc... the gummy bones that are covered with those sharp points, "to clean teeth." If a dog swallows a chumk of that pointy plastic, the points can become entangled in the striated walls of the digestive tract, and cause blockages, severe pain, and sometimes death. (I do NOT give the dental bones to my dogs!)

My pups love nylabones. I have yet to have a prob with the regular kind. The dentabone kind was is pieces within 10 minutes of my dog chewing on it.

Jake and Addie also love Kong products. The have bones, cones, treat balls, regular balls, etc. My friend's great dane loves em, too. Everything thing else is gone in a half hour. Even the "non-destructible" toys.

Anyone else have any great toy ideas for mega-chewing retriever pups?

Keegan gets the very thin rawhide chips that they call flips. They are very very thin. She doesn't really like pigs ears. She has a couple hooves and a kong. The booda bones and flips don't last very long.
Jessica, when Shaianne chewed on the nylabones/booda bones she almost always threw them up too. Wonder if its a greyhound thing?
