how long should it take to train my pup to sit?

i have been trying to train my pup to sit for a little over a week and as long as i hav a treat or she thinks i do she does fine but if i just tell her to sit she wont. how long does it usually take to train one i have been working with her everyday with the exception of a couple because of rain and work.

I made up a signal for Molly to sit, and it gets her attention more than my voice does.

Instead of using a treat, try a toy. Make her sit, and then throw the toy and let her bring it back. Just repeat, eventually she'll get it!

Yes always associate a hand signal with the voice command. With puppies they look at my hand and as I back the hand toward the pup and as they watch the hand come closer they roll back to a sit automatically. Then the rewards and praise come from you.

I have been using the NILIF training method with Bailey. I don't even have to tell him to sit anymore! He sits before I open a door, before I put his food down and before he gets any pets.

It sounds like she knows what "sit" means, but chooses not to obey unless she knows there's food for her. This is how I teach sit in my class (for treat users):

-say sit while slowly putting the treat directly over the dog's head. The dog should sit automatically
-praise and reward with a treat every single time
-once the dog catches on, you can say sit without luring and work in the hand signal
-after a few days when you start to notice your dog getting it, you can slowly take away the treats.. but don't stop cold turkey. Praise is given every single time. Treats are given randomly.. the 3rd time, 5th time, 2nd time, 4th time, etc. They'll continue to work hard for you because they know the treat could come the next time! Just to give you an idea.. here's an example of the same method:

Person A gets paid the same every paycheque. It never changes. Person B also gets the occasional bonus for a job well done. Who will be more inclined to work harder every single day?

It depends on the dog, and how consistent you are with your training.

Mine learned it in one sitting. Now, by learning it, I mean they knew what the command meant and knew what I wanted them to do, they just didn't feel like doing it.

I was told once that you know your dog knows the command when they refuse to do it. :P

Just have some patience, and don't overwork the pup! Short sessions work best! Maybe 15 minutes here and there, and then take a break! Or if you start to get frustrated -- STOP. Your pup will sense the frustration and you will both start to get frustrated. If that happens, just stop and pick it up again the next day.

I think your pup understands what you want...but only refuses to do it when you don't have a treat, right? If that's the case you need to slowly wean her off the treats..and I KNOW it's easier said than done I have a Lab/Beagle mix who is ALL about the food!! What I would do (and have done with my own dogs) is to ALWAYS have treats in your pockets, and I mean always. (its useful for teaching a reliable recall too!) However, she doesn't get a treat EVERY SINGLE time she sits, only once in a while so it keeps her on her toes guessing when she'll get a treat. For the times you don't give a treat praise, praise, praise. Also keep the training sessions short and sweet but practice MANY times throughout the day (remembering to only give treats once in a while, the ultimate goal is to eliminate the treats and have a dog that will respond well to praise, again easier said than done!), I'd have her sit before she eats, sit before she goes out or comes in, etc. Good luck

thank you all for your advice just to let u all know exactly what she does. when i have a treat and i put it to her nose and go back and up she will sit, as she does i say daisy sit. if i dont have a treat and do this during the same traing period she will sit, but if i am doing this and just tell her to sit she just looks at me like im stupid or tries to get to my hand. and the training for dummies is probably what i need this is my first pup and i want her to be trained but there are no trainers where i live. thank you for your advice i hope to here from u all some more.
