I went out out to feed my horses this morning and when I moved the bale of hay so I could better cut the strings, I was awarded with the sight of a very nervous mother mouse. She was frozen for a second and then she just took off. She must have been nursing or something because she left two VERY tiny babies in her wake. I, of course, went to get my camera. I was worried at first that she wouldn't come back, but by the time I returned, she'd already moved one of them to a safe location. As long as I stood very still, she wasn't bothered by my presence, retrieving her children one-by-one and darting off to put them someplace safe. I snapped a few pictures of the process, a baby, and the nest she'd made. So.... here they are.
One of the little tykes.
Picking up a baby to take to safety.
Taking the baby from the first picture.
The nest.
And for help on indicating the size of the children I included this picture of my pinki next to a pig from the "Pass the Pigs" game. The babies were about the size of the pig. (love that game)
Hopefully mom got them to a safe place where I won't accidently run into them again. There were four babies in all, I believe. She was prety amazing to watch and quite the dedicated mother. I think she's nested in our shed before as I have pictures of another mouse with four babies in a trash can. The babies were older in those pictures, but the mom looks the same. But then... momst mice look the same to me? Ah well, they're safe now and hopefully will remain that way.
