    Purring

I have a 6 week old kitten that is healthy and happy but never seems to purr. Is this normal?

Never experienced it, myself - I don't have a memory of a kitten that didn't purr - but what do other more experienced kitten-raisers here say about the age when a kitten starts to purr? Maybe they have to be older?

    Mermaid1,

Some cats purr so very softly you can't hear them. Mollie Rose (my tortie) used to purr so quietly, I'd have to put my finger on her throat to feel the vibration.

Some do purr very quietly as previously mentioned, but I have been around/had kittens before in the past who I thought "didn't purr".

My Wilbur is like MoosMom's kitty. I know he's purring when he's kneading his blankie, but can't hear it. And he's no baby. I have to feel it. Petey on the other hand sounds like a freight train! Her purr has gotten louder as she's gotten older.

I found Dille when she was barely weaned, and she never seemed to purr, but like Moomom, I had to put my finger to her throat to know that she was purring. That was three years ago this May, and to this day I STILL have to either put my fingers to her throat or lay my head on her side to 'hear' her purring

Finnigan purred normally when he was a kitten but now I have to put my ear to his side to hear him so I guess all cats are different.

I agree, the kitten is probably just purring very quitely. My cat, Oreo, sounds like a motor boat it's so loud!

My cat was pretty feral when I found her and would NEVER purr as far as I could tell. As she got older and began to trust me, the purring got louder and now at 7 months old her purr is audible from 3 feet away! Put a finger on the kitten's throat the next time you are about to provide a meal.. that's a sure way to find out.
I almost forgot.. she was 6 weeks old when I got her!
