    blood in poop

When are the poop problems going to be over!!!!! After switching to a low residue food Kade's poop is now back to normal not too soft but it again has blood around it. We just stopped 7 days of flagyl and started mixing in Nutro indoor kitten with the low residue food. Kloe again has soft poop. It seems that flagyl helps them both. they also did better on the special low residue food but they need to get back on kitten food. They are 4 and 5 mo old. Any ifo would be great. We have a fantastic vet that is following them it is just nice to hear that others went through the same thing and their cats are FINE now. Food choices is also driving me crazy. We have tried Science Diet Kitten which gave Kloe soft poop. Eukanuba kitten whick gave Kade soft poop and blood so we are now with Nutro indoor kitten.

Coccidia doesn't always show up on a fecal test, even multiple fecal tests. This happened to one of my cats and I remember it was very frustrating to keep seeing the blood streaked messy poop but all tests negative. When we used the cocciodiostats medication the problem cleared up after about a week. See below from the Mar Vista Animal Medical Center website on coccidia:

It should be noted that small numbers of coccidia can be hard to detect so just because a fecal sample tests negative, this does not mean that the pet is not infected. Sometimes several fecal tests are performed, especially in a young pet with a refractory diarrhea; parasites may not be evident until later in the course of the condition.

    How is Coccidiosis Treated?

We do not have any medicine that will kill coccidia; only the patient’s immune system can do that. But we can give medicines called “coccidiostats” which can inhibit coccidial reproduction. Once the numbers stop expanding, it is easier for the patient’s immune system to “catch up” and wipe the infection out. This also means, though, that the time it takes to clear the infection depends on how many coccidia organisms there are to start with and how strong the patient’s immune system is. A typical treatment course lasts about a week or two but it is important to realize that the medication should be given until the diarrhea resolves plus an extra couple of days. Medication should be given for at least five days total. Sometimes courses as long as a month are needed.

Kloe has been treated for everything-the list of meds is long. Kade though was dewormed and then given the pill for tapeworms. I will have to call to find out what deworming med they use at Friends of Cats. The blood seems to be lessening in Kade's poop and his stool is still fairly firm I will have to call the vet t oo to see of he should be treat for coccidia but Kloe's poop is getting softer again! She was checked out and is completely healthy-tretaed fir every paracite and worm so it has to be dietary. Hopefully after a few days it will be better. I am gradually changingthe food to Nutro indoor kitten. It is supposed to produce a drier stool-we'll see!
