    Fridae's Ears...

About a month ago my dog (Fridae) had gotten a real bad ear infection. The vet gave me some brown liquid to flush her ears out twice a day for 14 days and once a week after that. Her ears look better on the inside AND outside. She would scratch her ears and they would have scabs and get all bloody and she also lost some of her hair on her ears. I noticed yesterday that her hair is growing back! YAY! My baby girl is getting better. Thought I would share my happiness with u...

That's great news. I'm happy for Fridae! We have that problem with Serenity...she gets perpetual ear infections and Dr. B. gave us Zomax to use on her and said that they have good results with that.

Glad to hear the ear is better! Sadie had problems with her ears all last summer...she had an infection almost continuously from Aug-Dec. til we finally had to have her sedated and her ears cleaned out really good. We haven't had any problems since then, but I am sure to clean her ears 2 times a week and once the pool is out all the time, it will be at least daily!

    Head Shaking

Gemma is a twenty-two pound sheltie-poo and is in perfect health. For the last couple of weeks or so, however, I've noticed her occasionally shaking her head so that her ears flap. One of her ears is a tiny bit pink inside. Is there a medicated powder that I could buy from a pet supply store to stop the irritation, or should I take her to the vet?

Lennie, I would see a vet before putting anything in your dog's ears. If the problem is ear mites, you would need a specific ear drop to kill them. Mites can't be seen by the naked eye, so a vet needs to look. A good indication that the dog has mites would be a dark brown goo deep inside the ear.

If your dog has floppy ears, shaking hard can create what is called hemotomas. Basically it means big blood blisters on the flaps. Watch for big, soft bumps. The vet may need to drain them.
