I normally post on the Dog Board but I'm posting this for a friend.

She has a 12 year old female spayed cat and got a 2 year old male neutered cat about 6 weeks ago. The older cat just won't adjust to the younger one. She gets very aggressive when he's around and normally runs upstairs. My friend really doesn't want to get rid of the new cat. Does anyone have any ideas?

Tanya - I think that your friend has got it right introducing a male to a female because sometimes two femails together can be impossible. Our female lives happily with two males.
Chuck knows all about getting cats to get along and I'll just echo him - keep them apart for a while and try rubbing each with a separate towel and then letting them smell each other. Slowly does it and Good Luck!

I would just say for her to be patient.
She shouldn't have to get rid of the younger cat unless the older cat starts spraying and she can't take it anymore.
I have seen people on a Pet Story on animal planet that have to keep the cats separated. One upstairs and one down. And after several years they had finally had an animal behaivorist work with them to introduce them to co-habitate.

I did see your post yesterday and meant to answer but had an emergency and had to log off.

In my experience, after a while, most of the cats I had living together, even if they did not love each other as such coexisted peacefully. I even had to take my sister's two adult male cats (and my sister

) to live with us for a while. In the beginning there was trouble with Gigio (RB) who was 16 and the only male for a long time. My sister's cats were younger and much stronger and wanted to become the dominant ones. After a while they started tolerating each other ( I had 5 of them 3 males and 2 females). When in September I brought a kitten home one of my females would not have anything to do with him and would attack him. It lasted a while but now they are often found together.

I would try to give extra attention to the older cat, sometimes it's so easy to get distracted with a kitten since they're so cute and cats can be very jaelous too. It takes time and patience but , in most cases, it can be done. At least it worked for me.

Most female cats don't like males anyway and it will be hard for her to adjust especially at the age of 12 yrs old. You could try and give her some time, but you will probably find that it will be hard going.

I would say to be patient too. I've had smitten for about 3 years before she met Patches. Patches was only about a year, but we had to take care of her for a few months. We put her in a carrier and put her on the floor for Smits to smell and what not. She wasn't happy. It took a ltitle while but they got used to each other. Smitten always seemed a little annoyed with Patches, but they seemed like good buds. Atleast patches though so, she never left her side.
