Another dog

I have decided to adopt another dog.I am getting a 2 year old black male Pomeranian. His name is Brett. He is named after Brett Farve from the Packers. I'm not a Packer fan.

Anyways, I adopted him from a couple who can no longer care for him.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to house break him? He never really was fully housebroken. And I was wondering if anyone has housebroken a adult dog.

Also he is a bit timid around people. Is there anything I can do help him get use to people?

We got Kirby that was only use to a doggie door..not what is really housebroken..and he was 3..he still dont know to tell you he wants out..we have to take him out side on a consistant basis to make sure he goes..he does not go in the house any more..but still dont tell you he has to go..
He never learned as he was always use to the doggie door..but he holds it now till outside time.. We just kept telling him outside and no no if we caught him about to go inside and took him right out, took some time and lots of patiance, and it was frustrating for him to..

I never have house-broken a adult dog but I know alot about shy dogs. Helped my friend with a dog just like Brett(adorable name). Anyways, take Brett to your local park with Sam. Sam can help alot in this. Let children and adults pet him and socialize him. Always Supervised of course. Sam can show him how great it is to be around people. Let people pet her as well and maybe he'll follow suit. Good Luck and I hope I could help! ALso, congrats on the new dog!

Brett sounds a lot like my Luka. We just adopted her a month ago.

For housebreaking -- it's the same as what you would do with a puppy. Take him out as much as you can. You won't need to potty him as often since his bladder is stronger than a puppy's, but still 4-5 times a day would be good. Luka still pees in the house every so often, but it's not bad.

For his behavior -- take him anywhere and everywhere you can, and like Maltese_Love said, take Samantha with you if you can. Luka is VERY scared of men and we had a horrible first two weeks with her here because she was just absolutely nervous around my dad and brother. What we did was have them lay on the ground with treats on their chest. She is extremely food motivated so she did just about anything to get those treats. At first, they didn't pet her because it scared her off, but after a while she let them touch her. Whenever people come over to your house I would suggest a similar method, but I wouldn't ask your guests to lay on the floor Just have them put treats by or on their feet when they are sitting down. After he takes the treat(s), have them give him one out of their hand.

If you need any more help you can always ask me, since Luka is going/went through the same things.
