Everyone meet Zaphod Beebelbrox!
Okay, so there I was at the pet store innocently getting more food for my Starling, Tabetha, when I look over at the rat tank. (I know, I know! I shouldn’t have!!) There among the Black Hooded Rats was a treasure! The pet store had just gotten in a Buff Hooded Rat!! I’ve never seen anything like him before, his markings were perfect and his eyes dark black. I hummed and hawwed for the longest time. On the one hand (paw) I really miss Ed and I want a new rat. On the other hand (paw) I know that I’m going to be moving in a few months and shouldn’t be adding to the pet list.
However, the lady at the store saw me looking at the rats and she commented on the Buff. She (being a *very* good sales woman) brought him out of the tank and placed him in my hands. Zaphod nuzzled right into my sweater the same way Edmund had when I first picked him up!
Well, love won over reason. When I went in the pet shop I had NO intention of getting another rat, but at the same time I didn’t think I could pass up an opportunity like this one. Perhaps it is Fate.
I will never forget Edmund and he can never be replaced in my heart. However, I’m sure Zaphod and I will have just as many good years and good times together!
And yes, Zaphod is named after the coolest ‘cat’ in the whole Galaxy from Douglas Adams’s “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. Perhaps the greatest comedy ever written.
