    Smile Dog sledding

    Hi,
Does anyone have any information on one dog-dog sledding? I'm going to start with my female Polar Husky this winter, I should be getting a sled soon. I can't wait!!

    Thanks *sled_dog* for the siggy!!

With one dog, you need a super light sled. A kick sled would probably be best. Does your dog know directional commands? It takes a pretty confident dog to run alone.

Have you thought about skijoring? It's perfect for one dog and the equipment is cheaper than a sled!

Thanks! My husky ran with a team on expeditions, she's been pulling me on a plastic sled so I can see if she can run alone, she's doing pretty well but wants to veer off into the woods. She was a point dog so that might help, but I want a lead dog so it's easier for her. I also have a Golden Retriever but he probably wouldn't pull because he's 9 and is sort of scared of sleds. I guess I'll have to talk my parents into getting another Polar Husky, LOL.
    Thanks for your help.

An experienced leader would be a great addition. Sleet was given to me when I was just starting out. I had a four dog team at the time. Somedays I think we'd still be sitting in the driveway, one big tangled up mess, if it hadn't been for Sleet. She's retired now, but she taught me a ton of stuff, and taught my other dogs too. No one teaches another dog what's expected of them like another dog!

Check out the Second Chance League in Fairbanks,AK--nothing but rescued trained sled dogs and I've heard they will work to get a dog to the right family! They are on Petfinder.

I would say an experienced leader would be great too . I have to say that when I started sledding the best teacher I had were my lead dog(s)!

This site has a ton of links to sites with the info your looking for. Sounds very exciting! check if you have a local group or husky club that can connect you with others in your area, too.

Thanks! I actually tried with my Retriever, and he pulled a little bit with my Polar Husky. He mostly just ran or walked beside her, but he pulled a tiny bit and that made her a lot more confident, but I really would like to have a lead dog!! I really have to talk to my parents about that, because we have a lot of school and work so it would be hard to have three dogs. But when I'm old enough I would love to have a small kennel of racing dogs!!
    Thanks for the help!!

And if you would like to know all kinds of stuff about what Fuji and the other dogs do/did, go to www.polarhusky.com. I got to meet Mille, one of the Polar Explorers. She owns the dogs with Paul, you should see them on the site. Mille and Paul gave me Fuji. You can see all of the dogs in the "Kennel" in the "Dog Yard."

Wow, the Polar Husky site is awesome! I'll definitely bookmark. The dogs are gorgeous, they each have such fun personalities. Is your Fuji the same one in the "kennel"?

Yes, Fuji is the same one in the kennel. She just wasn't as happy with the expeditions anymore, so they retired her and gave her to me. My dad is in the Teacher Lounge under Lead Teachers, and finally Meet the Lead Teachers. He's a 5th grade teacher from Minnesota.
He and his class follow the expeditions. Fuji has gone many miles. I don't know exactly how many but I know she's gone thousands. Does that make sense? Ok, I should probably stop writing so much. If you want pics. of her ask and I'll try to get some on. I'm glad you like the website.
