    Story on my orphan pups

Hi Everyone...I had said I would post the story on my orphan pups, so for those interested, here it is.

As I said before I have 9 dogs besides the pups. I only have one male which is a pug and was SUPPOSED to be sterile. I took him from a breeder who did not want him due to this reason. . He is a wonderful boy and a very good looking pug whose name is Duke.

Due to all my females I checked with the vet who had diagnosed him as steril and he agreed that yes he was and had been tested twice to be sure. Now assuming he was I did not bother to have him neautered. Nor did I think anymore about it.

My Shih Tzu is a wonderful little girl to who is Shila and I year old. {Duke is 2) Her last heat, Duke showed no interest in her at all that I ever seen. Nor has he in any of my other females when in heat.

A little over a week ago I had let Shila outside and there were a couple of dogs running lose who attacked her and had her down. I managed to scare them away and rescued Shila. Other than scared she appeared to be fine. I put her in a room by herself to let her calm down and doctored her minor wounds. She was quiet and subdued, but otherwise seemed ok. I gacve her lots of love and cuddles and kept her away from the others so she could calm down and rest.

The next day I noticed just overnight her stomach had swelled up large. Not having any idea what was going on and scared that maybe the dogs had ruptured something inside, I rushed her to my vet. Even he could not find anything wrong that would cause her stomach to swell like that and that quickly. He finally said that the only thing it could be was that she had, had a heartattack due to the stress from being attacked by the dogs. That was all he could find that would cause her stomach to swell like that. He put her on some heart meds and water pills and sent her home, thinking with this medication she would be alright.

Once home I put her back in her room and left her to rest. A little later I went to check on her and she seemed better. A few hours later she appeared to be much worse. Was lethargic and showed no interest in anything. About 2 hours later I thought I heard something and went to check on her. Well I did, a puppy a bout halfway out and hung. Needless to say I was shocked and totally unprepared for this as I had no idea whatsoever she was pregnate. She had no milk and showed no signs of whelping at all other than her big stomach. I got the pup pulled and she made no effort to do anything at all. I got the bag broke and the cord cut and got the puppy to breathing. At this point she tried to take it away from me and kill it. I worked frantically to find a way to get it dry and warm. All in all she had 6 but I was only able to save 4, which is what I have now at 5 days old and alive and kicking so far.........Thanks for the interest and help to all...Jaquetta

    What a story!

Gosh, what a surprise you had. What did your vet have to say? I hope he re-evaluated whether the mother needed to stay on heart medicine. I hope all goes well with the little ones now. Are you bottle feeding them?

Bye the way, welcome to Pet Talk from a neighbor from Kansas

    What a surprise!

    How is the momma doing?

Most females will tear the sac off and eat it for the nutrients it contains. This sustains them for the next 24 hours when they can't hunt for food. Was this what she was trying to do?

Is she willing to nurse? It would really be best if she could, even part of the time. Mother's milk has special stuff in it that helps puppies ward off diseases.

Please let us know how things are progressing.

Sandy emailed me that the pups are doing good. They weight between 6 and 10 ounces. She is keeping mom away. Colsotrum (Mother's first milk that has the antibodies in it) changes after the first 24 hours into regular milk. The critical period is the first 24 hours. She is past this now so getting mom to accept the pups is not as critical if she is going to continue to attack them.

Sandy is doing a great job!

Poor you, hope it's nothing but one of those fatty non-cancerous-type lumps dogs sometimes get. Hang in there.

Puppylove, I hope its just a fatty tumor and not cancer. And if it is cancer they have different treatments available for animals. Keep thinking positive thoughts she will be ok.
I can tell you love her very much. Hold her and love her and think very positive thoughts.
Keep us posted on her health..................sammi
