    Pitbulls Hunt Cats At Park

This thread is to denounce and ask for help.

Men with pitbulls are hunting the cats of the Park of Redencao, at the city of Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil.

Redencao Park is a very big park in which about 80 cats live. We give then dry food, water and milk. Treatment when they are sick, castrate them, and the good care all the time we can.

I volunteer on the Cat Round of Redencao and have been trying to work with press and police in order to make them move and denounce and find and stop the people who are hunting the cats we take care of with pitbulls.

You can see pictures of the Park and cats at: http://geocities.yahoo.com.br/gatosd...cao/index2.htm

(the photos and site are from Cat Movement of Redencao who take care of the left side of the Park, Cat Round of Redencao take care of the right site of the Park)

The police and the politicians are not moving. Many cats have been killed alread.

The men come around 2-3 am, when there is no movement, hunt, and carry the bodies in trash bags. We have 3 witness for work in the park during the night, one is a beggar who lives there, two are guards who take care of facility and coffee shop.

Can you help in set a trap to these men and their pitbulls? We need ideas: we have no experience in this type of thing.

We are mostly ladies of very calm life.

(I would pass the ideas to police and press investigative journalists without saying from where it came.)

    Thank you for the help.

You need somebody to get photos of the men and dogs, a camera with a good zoom lens so you can get close ups of their faces.

Most unusual colour of the cat in the second photo (on the photos page of your site), he looks like he is asking for help too.

    Very good.

The photos are essential: so I spend the day dealing with the biggest local newspaper: they are putting a reporter and a photographer during the nights at the Park.

The info about getting accostumed to blood is important: it means they will need to hunt more. So, I pass this to the journalists, they are investigative journalists.

I also call the local biggest TV. They will investigate but can only do on Thursdays and Sundays, unfortunately. But it is better by some chance the tv gets the pitbulls and the men.

Tomorrow I will talk with the environmental police, they do not have investigators to deal with this. I will be very persuasive. My first talk with them, other people of the CAt Round were in charge of this so far.

I am sure we will get them. May God help us.

That's terrible! Start a letter writing campaign now. Flood the local papers, politicians and police stations with letters. Bad press often gets them moving.

I'd like clarify one point. There is a HUGE difference between animal agression and human agression in dogs. Just because a pit bull is animal aggressive (which lots of dogs are) and has killed another animal, does NOT mean that they will then become human aggressive. Case in point, my last foster pit bull, Daisy Mae. High prey drive, got a hold of a kitty , yet was still a successful therapy dog, visiting sick children in the hospital with not an aggressive bone in her body towards any person, ever.

I don't want to offend anybody, but this is one of the misconceptions that pit bulls are facing today and it's simply not true. Please keep us updated on the poor kitty situation.

I agree there is a difference between human and animal agressiveness. Maybe both must be taken care by specialists.

Many pitbulls are actaking children in this part of the country. It has been on TV, and journalists report the owners are sufffering a process.

I love cats and help to take care of them. It is not fair to the cats.

It's certainly not fair to the cats and I really hope you can get some authorities to do something about it. Good luck with it and please let us know how it works out.

There will be a meeting today at 5pm about this subject and also to the fact that some 3 cats were poised, including it was done a cropsis lab examination.

The Cat Movement of Redencao called the meeting, but we from Cat Round of Redencao are also going, they call on us.

I call the press (newspaper and TV) and also the police, who goes undercover.

People who belongs to the this group told that many people who does not like the cats often appears on the meetings to say the cats should be terminated, and so on.

    So, the police goes undercover.

I tell you later what happened.

    That's bull. Big time myth.

I'm suspicious about how anyone knows these dogs are pit bulls if there is no photo evidence. There are a lot of breeds that look similar, and people like to use the name "Pit Bull" to get attention from the media.

    Thank you Wolf_Q!

We have witness - the guards of the facilities of the Park - that saw the dogs and state they were pitbulls. Also the homeless who live in the Park saw the atacks and the atackers more than once and state they are pitbulls.

Pitbulls are a major problem in this part of the country, they have atacke two children lately and this is not all.

I read on a site that the problem are not pitbull terriers, who were once a domestic companion dogs in the USA, but the fight pitbulls, with which I agree.

So, I have recomened the press to look for the place were those fights happens and for those who makes the fights and train the dogs. Because, we have the impression that they are training the pitbulls hunting the cats at the Park.

As for the meeting, I did not believe my ears: the administrator of the Park stated that "it is not a crime an animal kill another animal".

So, we were left with the local politicians who are trying to influence the local environmental police to make them act.

And the press, who are covering all that refers to pitbulls laws that are being passed in relaiton to ferosious dogs. For instance, Rio de Janeiro, prohibited the presence of "ferosious dogs such as pitbulls, filas, and rotweillers " in public place.

The insesible authorities are more cruel than the men who bring their pitbulls to hunt cat at Park.

    Reaction

The press published news about the pitbulls on the park hunting cats at night. And the TV interview our ngo about the problem.

The radio starts to tell the problem next week.

The whole city know the problem now.

The total indignation of the people is visible and we receive support from many places.

We received phone calls from the authorities now saying they are going to do something about it.

The whole objective is to keep these pitbulls aways from the park and from our cats.

Today it was raining when it was tiime to feed the cats. But it was time to feed them, the rain had stoped.

So, they ate a lot and had their loveble milk - they love milk, and were dry.

We hope to be able to protect the cats of of the Park the best we can.

I hope the authorities know that the dogs are not the problem it's the owners of the dogs. Too many times these dogs get needlessly killed because of a rotten owner. I am all for stopping this horrible activity. I adore cats. I really hope they don't punish the dogs for what these owners have done.

That is too sad!!! How can people be mean to cats, dogs, or any other animal??? I mean I hear people saying all the time about how dumb they think cats are, they like to kick cats, and if they see a cat in thier yard, they try and shoot it!!!! I am sick of this and I just get so mad when they say things like that In some state, they said that they are trying to make it legal to get a tag for shooting stray cats as game!! I really, really, hope that you can stop these crazy people who train thier dogs to kill cats. It's the people's fault, not the dog's. You are so nice to the strays, they need lots of love, and you are just the person to give it to them.

It's nice to hear that something might now be done about it, those poor cats. I think you and your friends are very nice people for looking after the cats!
