    cat kneeding

My cat kneeds (paws me) every night before I go to bed. If she did this occasionally, I would call it cute. But night after night, it's getting to be quite annoying. I'm just glad that she is declawed or I would be all scratched up by now. I inherited her from a friend. Does anyone know a way to have her stop this behavior or at least limit it?

    Hello, and welcome to PT.
You must be a new cat owner? Well, you've come to the right spot for all your questions and needs. There's a lot of great people on PT.
I hate to be the one to break it to you, honey, but kneading is what cats do to get ready for bed. They knead their space to soften it and relax themselves. It is a natural thing for cats to do, and there really isn't anything that can be done to stop the habit. It is also a sign of affection, so the cat is comfortable with you and appreciates you giving her a new home. Sorry....

Even if she had her claws, you wouldn't be all clawed up by now. Cats retract their claws when they're "making biscuits" as some call it. Either ban her from your bedroom entirely, or accept that it is a sign of her affection and comfort, and see it for the blessing it is!

Actually, you're quite lucky. My cats do that to me every once in a while, but I wish they'd do it more. It is a sign of comfort and love. Your kitty feels comfortable with you, and probably thinks you're her mother. I agree, sometimes when they do it to the same area for a long period of time it can get a little sore, but I don't think there's much you can do. Welcome to PT!

One of my cats Tiger started to do kneeding more. When he is on my bed or goes on me he moves his paws. Before he use to do a lot of suckling. Our other cat Socks always did kneeding.

Welcome to PT. My Cally always kneaded before snuggling on my lap and she was around for 14 years! The good news for you is that she learnt to retract her claws so all I got were her cute pink paws

I wish you'd tell Zerlina that. She likes to knead my tummy, and I keep getting stuck by her sharp little claws! Now if she would just let me clip them...

But, I know that it's a gesture of affection. I just remind her that I don't have a nice thick fur coat to protect me from her loving.

You should be happy she still does it! Lightning only did it to me once, when we first got him!

Welcome to you and to Lightning! I have heard various theories over the years as to why cats do and do not 'make bread'. I have had all my cats do it, some more than others. My two kitties that came from a secure home, where they were nursed for several months, are the biggest kneaders! I think they got used to the habit.

I love it, but, I do know about the pain from the nails, and even the weight of the tubbies doing the kneading.

Does anyone remember that cartoon where the big tough bull dog is caring for that little black kitten, and it gets on his back and starts to knead him before going to sleep? The bull dog makes all these little whimpering grunts and bites his lip to hide his pain...that's me! I love it when my Oliver(the only one who does this) lays on my stomach and kneads my neck at bed time. I think of it as "painful love" , and I would be so disappointed if he ever stopped sharing it with me

WOW. You all must have ESP.

As you al lknow we adopted "MOrgan" from our SPCA several months ago. He was hit by a car an dleft for dead last Summer. He was brought to the SPCA where he was cared for until we adopted him. He was not well loved or cared for by the other humans. He is about 6 years old. I gave him my husband's birthday. :-)

Anyway about a month or so ago Morgan started kneading me at bed time. He takes the corner of my PJ top in his mouth and starts kneading. This goes on for maybe 15-30 minutes. My husband saw this last night and thought it was bizarre. I said it was natural and not to be alarmed. Morgan seems to be very happy and grabs the top of my PJ top in his moth and pull sit and kneads away.

This is normal? I told my hubby that he was happy now that he was in a "forever home", and was happy.

    THanks for your help!
