uhhh... humping herself?-Shadow

ok, this is a weird question, but she never did this when she lived with me, she has lived with my friend for 1 year now, and she has been doing this since she got there, basicly several times a day she with sit with her back legs straight out and her front paws placed between her legs and she starts humping herself I have tried to figer this one out but to no avail. anyone have any idea what in the world she is doing and WHY? for more info she is a 9 year old spayed sheltie/BC mix.

Strange.... I never saw that one before and I've always had females.

Beenie occasionally tries to jump our legs.

I used to have 2 female that would go at it several times a year. They would take turns....

Your description sounded to me more like she's scooting her bum across the floor than "humping herself." I agree with Becki, have her checked for worms and check her anal glands.

no, its not scooting accross the floor as she does this occasionaly but very rarly. she's been vet checked and she has a clean bill of health, I mean what she is doing honest to goodness looks like she is masterbating, unlikely obviously, but I am not sure how else to explain it, I have never see a dog do this before, she sits in one spot with her back legs splade her front legs directly in the center of her tummy and starts humping and making her happy sounds

Beeniesmom--the two females are vying for alpha. Their "humping" is a dominance issue, and is in no way sexual. As far as a dog trying to "pleasure" herself... Well, I've never heard of that one.

Raustyk occasionally does something similar. You see she is a big time groomer to Nanook, the cats & I. she loves to lick you from head to toe, especially the other dogs/cats ears & my feet. Sometimes she gets carried overboard, she'll really get into it and sometimes when that happens she starts to hump the air and she's usually in a kind of squatted or fetal position. Sometimes she even does it when she's grooming herself (but it need not be in the privates) I'd say it probably happens about once every 2-3 months. I think it's just a dominance issue. But when it happens when she licks herself I don't know why that happens. Would she try to dominate herself?
She's my girl but not all there upstairs. lol

Odd, Ihave never heard of this before either. I would take Iv4dogs advice.
