cauda equina syndrome

My 9 year old Golden Retrieve has been diagnosed with Cauda Equina syndrome. He has some symptoms of pain (more pokey than he used to be and tires more easily on walks, hikes) but no other neurologic symptoms.

Does anyone have experience with surgery for this problem? What is the recovery process like? If you dog had surgery for pain, not for neurologic symptoms, did the pain appear to resolve?
