    Delayed reaction...

I'm at work right now. It's a little slow and I got to thinking. A lightbulb went off in my head.

Okay, you're saying to yourself, "What now???"

This job ISN'T full-time!!! I just figured out that it's part-time (36+ hours/week) with benefits! I am SO angry. The wool got pulled over my eyes once again. UGH!! How could I have been so stupid??? When they asked me if I had a problem working 4 days on and 4 days off with another girl, I said no, figuring 10 hour days would be 40 hours a week. NOT!!!

My brother made me realize it when he emailed me. He told me that I needed to start looking again for something that IS full-time. He's worried that because the funeral home owners weren't upfront with me in the beginning, I'm going to get shafted again. Looks like I already DID get the shaft! So, I'll have to start looking for a part-time job to supplement my already low income.

*sigh* Thanks for letting me vent.

Are you salaried (paid by the month regardless of how many hours worked) or paid by the hour?

Unfortunately, I'm paid by the hour. They really stuck it to me. I'm just angry at myself for not realizing what they were doing.

I try to pick up as many extra hours as I can, and will work night visitations. But if we're not busy, that doesn't help either.

Maybe you can talk to them and explain that while you were willing to try the new schedule, it is not working out for you and you would like to go back to the old schedule? I think that's what I'd try first. If they refuse, then ask if they can add at least 4 hours a week more in some other capacity for them - - to compensate for your lost wages. And if that doesn't get you anywhere, remember God's in charge and keep looking, another opportunity will come to you! Will keep you in my prayers!

I got the shaft once too with a part time job. They said when I was hired that they would work around my school schedule after the summer, and then when I told them my class schedule they fired me

Something will come your way, just have faith!!

I know something better will come my way. It's not like I LOST my job or anything. It's more of an inconvenience than anything else. I'll just have to work two jobs till I can find a full-time one where I don't.

    Sorry Donna {{{HUGS}}}

All companies are different, perhaps they do consider 36 hours as full time. I worked with a company that DID -- they MADE you take mandatory breaks, UNPAID breaks, so basically we were there for 40 hours, but between all the little breaks they made us take, our paycheck consisted of 36 hours. Another company considered fulltime at 37.5 hours because of the breaks they made people take (even thought we were there 40 hours).

All that said, can you ask them to please put you on salary? You can make it sound like it'll benefit them by doing so.

    Damn, that sucks. *HUGS*

But at least you have benefits.... look at that as a silver lining.

I doubt they'll put me on salary. I asked Renee if there was any way I'd be able to work 40 hours/week and she said no.

So, back to the drawing board!!!

Sorry it has not worked out the way you wanted it to, I sure you are upset about it. I just won't be upset at them to much in less they told you clearly it would be a 40 hour a week job. Sense 36 hours is considered full time, at least in the state of Florida and I'm assume in most states. I believe it's anything over 35 hours is considered full time, with benefits, when offered.

Maybe for a while you can get another part time job, till something comes along that you like, that will give you the 40 hours you want. Our you could figure out how much $ your losing from those 4 hours and ask for that much of a raise.

I worked at a company that considered 35 hours 'full time'. Maybe you just assumed something? 36 hours, 40 hours, while I know every penny counts, it doesn't seem THAT significant to me, once you take out taxes, etc. Why not just pick up 5 hours somewhere else on your four days off? Maybe another place could fit you in, and while you wouldn't be able to work every single time, you could most days. Just a thought.

    Johanna,

You're right. I am going to look for something else part-time. It's really not THAT much money (abour $50 more) but it's the principal.
