Peta targetted my 12 year old daughter!!!

I am so mad right now I can hardly see straight

My daughter is taking 2 classes at our local university. This is for High acheivers grade 6 through 9. I was worried about her being on a college campus and being only 12, she has a buddy she walks to lunch with and I was assured there have been no problems in 25 years since this program began.

Now mind you this is my daughter who loves animals and wants to be a vet. She is taking zoology as one of the courses...she would no sooner hurt an animal than hurt herself.

Anyway, while walking into the food place a young man handed her a flyer, a college aged girl ran up to her and said don't open that please you will be sorry. She listened and threw it out, a friend of hers opened it over her hamburger. It was a photo of animals being killed and tortured and was very graphic. Her friend got violently ill.

I am calling the ATS office that is running this program, they are there on campus and have a place for kids to go if anything happens although I think for the money, I am paying $400 for a 3 week course, they should have people walking around to watch for this kind of thing.

I am also going to try to go catch him doing this tomorrow, so if you don't hear from me I will be in jail

I don't know for a fact who he was with. I asked my daughter to get a flyer and not to open it next time. I will try to find the person also.

Lexi Lover, the course is geared toward kids her age, if you in a college zoology class I am sure the content is much harder.

Oh my gosh that is soo horrible! That is mean that they passed that out to people that loves animals and won't hurt them. Tell us who that horribly awful person that did that.

People sharing their "political" views on a college campus is not that unusual. Unfornately, some of these views can be quite "extreme" or use more offensive methods to get their "message" across. Throwing away this unsolicited material is the best policy.
I would tell your daughter it is okay to say no to accepting such materials. I don't believe the "escort" should have showed the material to your daughter if it was so awful. She is too young at this point. If she continues to pursue her goal in becoming a vet, she will have her own experiences in this area soon enough. I applaud her determination. She may be instrumental in treating animals that have been subject to cruelty.
I would turn this unfornate "incident" into a positive. Use it as an oportunity to discuss both your views on such subjects. Get to know how your daughter feels about it. There may be more contraversial handouts in the future. Especially, safe sex, anti-drugs, drinking, and tobacco brochures. It is a college campus and these are things that discussed on campus on a regular basis. This may be a good time to open up a "dialogue". 12 years old now a days is more mature than when we were 12!

Scooby....there was no escort...thats the scary part of her classes, it was just a good samaritan. She only is there for a few more days. Well she learned a valuable lesson about people and luckily she didn't have to see that. She has a pretty stong stomach, she has done lots of dissections with no problem. Its just that she is 12 so to me that was unethical and down right tacky.

I can understand why you would be upset with a 12 yr old girl
getting pictures of violence & cruelity. Have you contacted the
PETA group yet? Believe it or not, I am not a member of PETA,
but think it's not a good idea to slam them for something unless
you know for sure who gave this literature/flyer out.

A copy of the flyer would be good to have & if you also contact
the school, maybe the admin group can help identify these
people & tell you what's going on. Good luck.

Well it is not a good idea to assume someone of something without proof, I am venting with friends though and PETA has a track record of this type of thing, thats where my assumptions came from.

I did call the school, one of their administrators was given the flyer also, it was PETA but unfortunately there is not a whole lot they can do about it.
