Neutered cat

I have a male cat that is about 1 year old, who I just got neutered yesterday. Today is his first day of freedom as the kitty Dr. told me to keep him in his cage until this morning. As soon as I let him out of the cage he went straight to the litter box(as would I) and his urine smelled like "cat spray". My question is this, is this cat spray or is it just strong urine smell from not going potty for a day (he is very prissy and will not pee anywhere but in a clean litter box). and will it go away.

He went all day without urinating? How long was he is the crate? Usually if you keep an animal confined after a spay or neuter it is to one room not to a small carrier that can't hold a litter box or food. IMO the urine probably smells so bad due to the length of time he had gone without urinating. Poor baby his little bladder must have been overfull. I think your vet was mistaken in telling you to keep him confined to his carrier. Keep him confined yes but that is too small a space to be left for so long. I had my girls spayed the most recent being 2 weeks ago. She was confined to a crate overnight but the crate was big enough for her, her litter, her food and some space to move. It was about the size of a large dog kennel. I really hope there is no complications to your baby going so long without using.

If he's a boy kitty then no confinement is needed. Neutering the boys is no big deal and they are out and about in no time.

If he has been so long in the crate his urine will have been very concentrated and smell bad. Cat spray is basically urine and it will smell less if there are no more hormones produced -but not smell totally neutral. I suppose it is also possible that the hormones are still in the blood immediately after neutering.

Tell him he was a very good boy not to just pee in the crate. My boys would have done so

Poor baby! I agree, I think the vet was wrong to have you keep him confined in a carrier all that time. That is way to small. I would imagine that not urinating for that length of time may have something to do with the strength of the odor of the urine. Must be a good boy to not have gone in the carrier after all that time.
