    People React to my Chi

This topic is posted here for a reason. For the most part people I run into are really nice and really get a kick out of my Chihuahua and then there are people who look at me kinda disgusted when they see me carrying around my little dog. Saturday I took my dog to a meeting with me (AA meeting) that I go to every week at this little run down, filthy dirty old church. I had her under my arm and went downstairs to the so-called cafeteria to get a cup of coffee, like I always do, and have done more than once with my Chihuahua under my arm. Well the guy who works behind the counter told me that I couldn't bring my dog in there because of the "Health Department Rules". I really had to laugh and I told him I understood and would take her out immediately because I didn't want HER to catch something. I guess that was kinda rude but it really made me kinda mad. You can sure tell the dog haters from the really cool people. I really didn't realize there were so many people out there that didn't like dogs till I got her. Not just the guy in the cafeteria but people in general I noticed that most men (Pet Talker men don't get mad) are the ones who always have the nasty comments to make - like OH I SEE YOU GOT YOUR RAT WITH YOU TODAY and WELL IT KINDA LOOKS LIKE A DOG etc.

Purrley, two years ago when I decided to become a member of my church I had to attend some classes. Nothing serious, just very relaxed and informal and we all sat around in a circle. One night at New Members' Class one of the girls brought her new little chihuahua puppy. What a doll!!!!! Everyone was just instantly in love and she actually had to pass this sweetie around the circle for everyone to hold and adore (men included). I don't think many people paid much attention to the pastor that night even though all the little sweetie did was sleep in her mommy's arms. We all just couldn't stop looking at her.

I agree that lots of men seem to be afraid to openly say they actually like small dogs. My son-in-law is a big chihuahua fan and they hope some day to have one. They even have a chihuahua calendar on their kitchen wall but don't have a dog at all!

My hubby is a big fan of poodles. I am sure lots of men think of them as "girly" dogs. It's too bad that dogs (as well as people) always have to be stereotyped! Actually their closed minds are their loss really.

Hi Purrley, the US isn't exactly the land of the free dogs. The caf worker had a right to tell you to leave, his job could have been jeopardized if someone caught him allowing a dog near food, so don't get TOO mad at him for being uptight. In France you can have dogs in restaurants, why not here?

I occasionally get nasty remarks for not having my dog on a leash when I walk her (she does not bug people or run away or she wouldn't be off the leash) but 95% of the people smile when they see her. Nasty remarks are made by miserable people - don't let it get you down, I doubt your dog cares about their opinion!
