David Prette speaks with CTV News form his Vaughan, Ontario home on Tuesday.

An eight-year-old Toronto-area boy is recovering after having part of his ear torn off by a 120-pound Rottweiler-Labrador cross. The attack has some parents calling for an expansion to the province's pit bull ban.

The attack occurred Monday evening when a group of five or six kids in Woodbridge found the dog running free in the neighbourhood. They brought it into the backyard and called animal control officers to come pick him up.

As they waited, they played. One of the children threw a ball and the eight-year-old victim made an attempt to catch it. As he did, he was bitten on the leg by the dog and forced to the ground. The victim attempted to get away when the dog then bit him on the ear.

He was finally released from the dog's grasp and he ran into his home.

The dog is now with animal control in Aurora. He is under quarantine and being tested for rabies.

The boy had his ear and ankle stitched up and he's expected to be fine.

York Regional Police say they want to talk to the owner of the dog involved in the attack and are asking the public to help find the owner.

The attack has some parents in the neighbourhood calling for an expansion to the province's pit bull ban.

The Ontario government passed legislation banning new pit bulls in Ontario during a rare winter session early this month.

Under the law, pit bulls that are already here must be neutered. It also requires that the dogs are muzzled and leashed in public.

The law also sets hefty fines and jail terms for owners of dangerous dogs.

So sad. Yes, ban the labrador! Sorry couldn't help myself. I wish people had some sense of how stupid breed specific discrimination is. Hello, you pick up any stray off the street and let you kids play with it and your risking getting bit by an agressive dog. Too bad the little dogs can't bite an ear off. I'd like to see them try to ban chihuahuas. We should breed rotties down to chihuahua size, same breed, but it can't inflict the big injuries if it attacks so its not considered dangerous.

A Chihuahua could do some serious damage to an infant, so we should ban them too. We don't need to breed dogs to be smaller, we should start breeding them without mouths.

I wish people would have the common sense not to let their dogs roam free!!! This wouldn't have happened had the owner's been more responsible!!

umm isn't the only test for Rabies, is to kill the dog & look at his brain? or am I still stuck in old school?

I saw a lady walking a pitt bull downtown Ottawa today, without a muzzle.

The law is working like I thought it would, no one really cares.

Last I heard cutting off the dogs head was the only test for rabies.

Perhaps they're only observing the dog for signs of rabies.

Most animals only live so long with rabies before they die from it.

Stupid people that think its the breed, its the people! Of all the dogs I've come in contact with at work, the only one that tried to bite me was jack russel terrier. Not a rottie, not a pit bull, it was a little dog! Don't get me wrong, I love jack russels, I know a few people that have them and they are great. But the point is that I've never seen aggression in one of those 'dangerous' breeds.

King 2005 -- the law doesnt come into effect until August 28th so she can walk her pitbull without a muzzle if she wishes! It is a very bad law in its present form and inflicts misery and undue punishment on innocent and well trained dogs and their owners! It also takes away your civil liberties as in letting dog officers and policemen enter your home at any time without a warrant on suspicion you may have pitbull type dogs! Breed specific law is never a good thing!
