    Toenail Time!!!

Got scratched a li'l the other day and noticed Smokey's nails were a bit long

we bought some clippers and syptic pads last week and attempted to clip Smokey's nails...

First wimpy ol' me tried to hold him (40 lb wriggling doggie can wriggle a LOT!), no dice.

So Josh(b/f) holds him while I *gulp* attempt the clippage of nails.

I got PART of one, he was calm enough for that split second, but immediately was wiggling all over the place (friggin bonked me on my lip!)

so we decided to wait a bit for him to calm down (I swear this kiddo is wacko)...

we brought out the clippers again to see what he'd do, he just looked at them... so he doesn't YET know what they mean... keyword being YET

then, amazingly enough, he was sitting on the couch relaxing/sleeping, and decided to try it once more... not holding him down (but prepared to so he doesn't injure us or himself) I slowly easy picked up his right front paw, put nail into clipper thing, and SNIP... then he started wiggling

my vet suggested benadryl to calm Mr. Smokey down when he comes in to the vets (he HATES getting his shots!), so I figure what we'll do this weekend is give him a li'l dose of benadryl, wait half an hour or so, then try it again.

if it doesn't work this time we are taking him out to get it done and possibly get tips from the clipper.

Trying to find a pic of our clippers, but they have that guard on it...

We have a major toenail problem with Sahara...even the sight of the clippers and she high-tails it to the other end of the house and hides! The groomer clipped them just fine though

We had it suggested to us to use peanut butter or something equally as yummy to distract while you do it. The other thing too...use the "distraction" and only do one at a time. Do one and then wait and hour or so...soon, he'll get used to the idea that toenails = treats! It doesn't work for our dog but many he will hold still long enough to lick some PB off a spoon while you can clip. Benedryl doesn't calm any of my pups down so it wouldn't affect our end.

    Best of luck!!!!

When a waterbug leaves his friends and climbs the stalks, he is unable to return. But he gains a beautiful new body and a glorious perspective on a new world. He knows his friends will join him with their new bodies one day...one glorious day

we're lucky MAXIMUS wears down his
own nails...when he feels the need to
bark at other dogs walking in front of
'his' yard...he runs from one side of the
house to the other, across the cement
    sidewalk in the backyard...of course
    this happens a few times a day...nails
    done...
