A tractor-trailer hauling chickens collided with a Krispy Kreme doughnuts truck, killing some of the poultry and causing the highway to close for a time as crews tried to round up the escaped fowl, police said.

The trucks and their loads of fresh fare were traveling on U.S. 20 early Tuesday when they collided a few miles east of LaGrange in northeastern Indiana, LaGrange County Sheriff Greg Dhaene said.

It took a crew of eight or nine workers to corral the surviving chickens running around the crash site and put them in other trucks, closing the highway for about three hours, Deputy Ron Fennell said.

The doughnuts didn't spill and no people were injured, Dhaene said.

"It's a junk food eater's worst nightmare," Dhaene said.
