Magoo went back to the Vet (he's ok)

We went back to get Goo's eye drained today. The Doc finally talked to the vet optimologist (sp) and offered a few choices in how we deal with Magoo's eye.
Since he belongs to PT I'm going to throw out the options and see what you all think.

    1) Continue to drain the eye as needed. No harm in continuing on the way we have been doing.

    2) Stop draining the eye and let it build up and put pressure on the tear duct tissue. According to this vet specialist it won't hurt him and it should take about two to three months of fluid build up to finally destroy the duct tissue and then it will stop completely on it's own.

    3) Do the surgery and scrape everything out. The specialist said they would have to scrape the eye socket really good, sew him back up and that should fix it.

What we opted for today was the regular draining.

Option 2 is not an option in my book. I really think after his eye reaches a certain point it starts to bother him. He rubs at it and his ears even seem to bother him. When I notice it bothering him I call the vet and make an appointment. At that point his ears start to get juicy. You can hear them squish when you touch them. The doc said it probably puts pressure on his ears. I will not make him go through that for several months waiting for it to clear it's self up. He also said that there is a slight risk that it could burst outward or Goo could accidently scratch it open. I'm not gonna deal with that!

That leaves the choices between 1 and 3. There is always a risk when any kitty goes under so that is something to consider. Magoo has gotten used to going and he didn't even whimper today. He sits there all handsome, gets his two second draining, and rides happily back home.

What do you guys think? We don't mind taking him about every six weeks to get it done so that is not a problem. Magoo has gotten used to going and doesn't seem to stress at all anymore so this makes option 1 an ok thing. Option 3 is also good but with a slight risk.

I wouldn't have a Magoo thread without pictures!

Here he is washing all that nasty white coat stuff off of his eye

Here I am with my eye all flat again

All that vet stuff called for a serious nap!

    Doesn't he look stressed?

After his trip, bath, and nap he is in a wonderful mood.

    Hi Eberbody!!

    Thatnis a tough decision,as number3,might fix everything,once,and for all,but if Scrappy Magoo,is an Older Cat,you might,be concerned,with the risk.How old is Scrappy Magoo,as I dont remember,his age,coming up.You,should go,with whatnyou are comfortable,with,and Scrappy angel,will be,with his pal,every step,of the way.

Lisa, thank goodness you put the "He's ok" in there, cause when I first started to read the title, my heart did a major thump.

Well, from all that I have read Lisa, it seems to me that you have your heart set on #1 and if I was in your position, that is the one I would pick also. If Magoo is starting to get real comfortable with doing it this way and it's okay with you guys, than why change it.
    Number 2 is definitely out.
The thing about #3 that bothers me is, "It should fix it."
The word "should" is not a guarantee to me. The surgery is not necessary right now and can be put on hold, if or when it does become necessary.
This is just my opinion as you know what is really best for Magoo.

Have I told you lately how much I love you Magoo.

Give that sweet boy a big hug and kiss for me please.

I vote for #1 until a specialist doesnt used the words "should" in a sentance when describing the ultimate outcome.

Thanks guys! That is kind of where I'm at too. Like the doc said today, if the fluid becomes cloudy or starts to contain pus then we can do surgery then. Right now it's always perfectly clear. Everytime they drain it they get about 12cc's. It's pretty steady in the amount.

Gary, Magoo is guesstimated to be about 8 years old.

I would stick with option 1 until it started to bother him. I mean he handles it pretty well and his comfort is what matters.

I also agree that option one sounds like the best way to go

I agree, whatever you feel comfortable with. If he has no problem getting it drained then I'd stick with that for now.

Yeah i too think option no 1. If Magoo is used to that already. I would not want to put my kitties through an op unless absolutely necessary.

    I love Magoo, he's such a cutie

I think your first option is best for Magoo, because that is what he is use too, as long as it's not hurting him. Number 2 option is not a good thing to do in my opinion. Number 3 option, if it's not going to fix the problem completely, then there would be no point to it. So I would stick with number 1.

I think I'd go with option #1 as well. #2 is a horrible sounding option! And #3 is a no guarantee one. Is there any way the vet could show you how to drain it? Or would you be too squeamish about that? Give that handsome boy a smooch for me.
