    Quick kitty destresser question

I know this has been mentioned before, didn't find it on a quick search.

Lady's Human also belongs to two kitties (besides goofy Lady-girl). He hasn't been online much as they are in the process of moving 300 miles west. (Upstate NY). What can he (over the counter) give two cats to help them relax during the journey? One in particular completely freaks out at any car ride at all, so they don't want this to be 5 hours of complete torture for the poor things.

He talked to the vet, and the vet's office refused to give him anything, as they have not seen the cats in 6 months. They wanted to schedule a general check-up in a couple weeks - but the moving company is there packing the trucks today!

Hiya, don't stress. I just flew with my cat for Christmas over 1500 miles to florida then back the same 1500, she did fine, but what you can give them is Dramimine, like you take for car sickness and stuff. I got my at Walgreens, I got "Wal-dram" Give him/her about half a pill if it's an adult cat. You can also ask the phamasits how much to give them most can tell you. My cat I gave it too was calm and just cleaned herself or slept, it will also help them from getting sick on the ride. It doesn't make then go to sleep just calms them like a person without thinning the blood like sedation.

Karen, I don't know what they can get over the counter, but I do know a lot of vets recommend NOT sedating them at all. If it's a long trip, the cats will eventually calm down and will settle in quickly. As long as the humans are calm and relaxed, the cats should pick up on that....hopefully.

Just let them know if they don't get anything, that it's not the end of the world. 300 miles isn't that far, and they will all arrive a little tired, but ok in the long run.

Drs. Foster and Smith have Rescue Remedy to put them at ease but not knocked out completely. They say it is very good for cats who are afraid of thunderstorms, going to the vet or taking a long journey.

Rescue Remedy can be purchased at any GNS(?) store. The chain nutritional supplement store. I bought some once and it's heavy on alcohol. NOT that there's anything wrong with that, but just so you know.

Rescue Remedy works. However, when I moved from CT to MI, I drove 663 miles (12 hours) with 6 cats. I put 2 girl cats in 2 carriers, and the boys I separated in their own carrier. I never dreamed the trip would be so easy! I didn't need the Rescue Remedy afterall, and finally gave it to Kimmy for Zam and Logan.

I've heard good things about rescue remedy as well. Is this going to be a flight or a drive? Aaron drove from Cincinnati to San Jose with Marius and Scooter in 3 days and managed to survive without meds, and believe me, that's saying something! Scooter is somewhat of a high strung cat and he did fuss and complain, but you're right...he did calm down after awhile...

I think that it is wise that a vet just doesn't give out meds without seeing the cat, but is there another vet in town?

I drove from Boston to Cincinnati with a HIGHLY nervous cat, and would NOT do it again for all the tea in China.

I have heard about the Dramamine....and would try that.
