Maybe I'm just an airhead, but how does one go about putting an avatar under their name?

User CP - Edit Options - scroll to the bottom where it says 'Avatar'

I'll move this to General - it's a question many newcomers have. First, you need to find or make an image that's a maximum of 60 pixels square. A jpg or a gif file works, other formats don't. Then go under your User CP (buttons on the top right of the screen), and, as BCBlondie said, hit Edit Options and scroll down - you'll see the thing to change or add an avatar there!
