    Tonight...

Tonight we were told that one of the managers at Wal-Mart do not want us there doing what we are doing.. Can you believe that?? We don't know if it is true or not but Mike plans to go talk to the Big manager one day this week and see if that is so.

They have started moving all those portable storage containers (used for lay-a-way out) and the lot is about empty and our kitty hidding spot is exposed. They are filling it up with garden soil and stuff so we have lost our protective spot anyway. I brought my shelters that I made home so they wouldn't get distroyed or thrown away. We did put food down and about 3/4 of it got ate. We are not going to try to trap there anymore until Mike meets with that manager and finds out rather they care about what we are doing or not.

On the bright side, there are many, many more out there that we can help and we DO have that quick stop mananger that is wanting us to get those...... (Did I forget to mention that Mike is PO'ed and wants to call the newspaper if that man says we have to stop??!!!))

Who told mike this in the first place? I'm just curious.. no you are right, he should'nt approach this with anger cuz it might be a rumour... Usually people complain, "We don't want you putting food down because it attracts the rodents" or the fox or the racoons etc... Best to say you'll only put down food when the cats are there, you'll watch them eat it and it's part of a process in trapping and that you have the backing of a city sponsered rescue group (lie a little). The cats attract rodents (you could say) by tearing open trash. They don't kill rodents, they eat the trash. (Cats only kill mice when mom has taught them how, many ferals do not know how to hunt and so eat sticks and leaves, crickets, many of my ferals have had hard black stools from this diet). Tell them the mothers are dumped house cats, the babies grow up with no knowledge of how to hunt. By leaving them there, they are (Walmart) making the situation worse.

One of the employees, the man who watches the door at the garden center told us that. HE was all for us and what we were doing and said he just didn't want us to get into any trouble.

I say call the media. You'll get lots of attention and support there. Trust me, I've done it!

Also, talk with the manager. If you're not happy with his attitude, call the corporate office and ask to talk to the head man. Do whatever you have to do to get these cats trapped and taken care of. This is not the cats fault!!! It's human's faults for not being responsible pet owners, damn it! When are people going to realize that anyway???

I agree - call the media. Nothing they like better than a feel-good story, especially at this time of the year.

Also if they don't allow you to continue trapping them, they'll have a totally out of control colony by Springtime! Then you can also bring up the fact that these cats have had no vaccinations, and Heaven forbid a rabid animal shows up and the colony is affected by this. Then it becomes a public safety/health issue. They should be thankful you are doing this, as it's a volunteer effort that needs to be done. Tell Mike to speak calmly with whoever, and rationalize with these people explaining the what ifs. If nobody steps up to the plate to help these cats, they'll get sickly etc. Busy body people GRRR! That's why I trap descreetly.

The doorman tonight (next night) said he had not heard anything like what the doorman told us last night... he is as puzzeled as we are.. We just went and made a quick dump of the food and left tonight but we did see yet ANOTHER one.. Dark Gray with a beautiful white bib and it almost came to us when we called it. No sign of the siamese or the other 2 kittens we had seen before. They are really clearing it out there where they were hidding so I think the have relocated somewhere else?

Laura, sometimes you have to repeat after me..."you can't save the world"...repeat constantly, and do only what you can take on. Leslie's car's in the shop again, so I had to get her at the train station last night so she could get a few groceries. I had been doing my rounds behind a milk processing plant, and spotted a cat under a dumpster so set a trap. Not wanting to spook the cat by sitting watching, and not wanting nosy people around I drove around the corner only to hear plaintive wailing from another cat! When I saw and heard this poor cat, I raced back and got the trap (left food for other) and tried till I had to get to the train station. Dragged Leslie back with me to keep trying for 'elevator butt' and after much coaxing he finally came dashing over to me from the fenced in area! What a gorgeous love-bug too! All white with a blue eye, and a gold eye. Starved for love, and food. Poor boy has an abcess on his tail though arghhh. Lots of Siamese in this young boy, and I can't believe anyone would throw him in this scummy area. I think because idiots around here see the milk trucks with the nice pasture scene with barns, grass and cows, they think that's what's back there. WRONG! Waste water treatment plant that stinks like H**l (I know cats have fallen in that muck too) and huge trucks roaring by constantly. All you can do about your gang is keep the peek, and keep them fed for now. *sigh*

QSL, can't wait to see pictures of that white one with a good shot of those EYES!! Has to be awesome!!

I went today and bought a cage.... Got make to come over and help me catch them to put them in the cage.. He got all bit and scratched so I got a refill on my anitbotics and gave him those. Good news is they are now in a cage!

More news is they go get their "fix" and shot Tuesday morning and I will be using My Babies vet for that...he is in the program with Cat Haven and I had no problem getting them a fast appointment. Get them done Tuesday and I leave Wednesday.... .. So they are now caged and ready for their "fix" Tuesday... (Large cage, NOT kennel)

I asked Mike is those scratches and bites have put us out of the feral cat businiess and he said "NO!".....

Uh oh Laura! I use cotton laundry bags with the cinch cords to round up escaped ferals, or get them from the cage to the vets. They work great! I tie them into the bag, put the whole bag into a carrier, and off to the vets. The vets can tranq. them in the bags without stressing the kitties out much. The white boy is so sweet! He's got a LOT of Siamese in him...MRRRrrrrRROOOWSSS just like one lol! He's been so exhausted I was in the bathroom making all kinds of noise for a good 10 minutes this A.M and he never even woke up once! I kissed him awake. Whoever gets this cat is in for a treat. Such a nice and personable cat. And did I say handsome?

Ugh.... That bag sounds like a wonderful idea... One question... HOW DO YOU GET THEM IN THE BAG???

I got to take a pic and show you how I have them set up now... And we can transfer them back to Mikes in that cage without having to remove them.

Watch out for Wal-Mart, Laura. I just read this story about one in Indiana.

Wal-Mart Employees Charged With Shooting Cat On Manager's Orders

    POSTED: 7:26 am EST December 30, 2004
    UPDATED: 2:48 pm EST December 30, 2004

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Two Wal-Mart employees have been charged with felony animal cruelty after police said they followed a manager's orders to shoot and kill a stray cat.

The men, both assistant managers at the Supercenter, were arrested and released after a court appearance Wednesday. Christopher Anderson, 29, and Jeffrey Hardin, 21, told police the store's manager ordered them to get rid of the animal that was living in a storage trailer behind their store.

Anderson and Hardin repeatedly shot the cat with a pellet gun from the store until it died the following day, a Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department report said.

All managers potentially involved in the incident have been suspended without pay pending an internal investigation and could be fired, said Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sharon Weber.

"We were outraged when we learned of this incident. This kind of action is completely inconsistent with the way we do business," she said.

A truck driver who reported the incident said he saw store employees placing what he believed to be a dead animal in shrink wrap a day after he heard workers joking about shooting the cat.

Store manager Darrel Weitzel told police he had told some of his employees to get a gun and get rid of the cat after attempts to coax it from the trailer failed, according to a police report.

Anderson and Hardin were scheduled for a hearing next Tuesday.

Laura, The way to get the cat in the bag (not to be confused with letting the cat out of the bag ) is to roll the opening back into a cuff (like on pants) and then work it over the cats head & body slowly. Once the head's covered, then you can carefully push the cat's body into the bag. Once you know the cat's inside, then take your hand, and close off the opening, cinch the cord, and wrap it around the bag top a few times and loosly knot it for added safety. Put into trap or carrier to be extra safe. Tell the vet to leave the cat inside the bag until sedated. It's very easy to find their hip while they're in the bag. Works like a charm for some fiesty one's I've dealt with. And Grace...that story makes me sick, but it also doesn't surprise me anymore. I've seen, and heard of more horror than I can stand. I hope the managers, and the employees all get fired, and face a judge as well.

Grace, that is a simple awful story... I am beginning to believe that wal mart is not a cat friendly place AT ALL! Are those managers taught to hate felines? DISGUSTING! Hopefully, that will cost wal mart so much $$$$$ that they'll be glad to have trappers come in and trap them?

Qsl, thanks for the rest of the story.. It helps to know that. They are still terriably spooked after catching them today and they are no longer happy about me sticking my hand in the cage near them. Mike said he won't be doing that again! I did get a cage that opens from the top or the side.

I am posting new pictures in Cat General for everyone to see soon as I get them uploaded...
