Kia developing neurological problems?? :(

I'm starting to get a little concerned here. I'm wondering if that seizure did more damage than I originally thought.

She's just not the same. Physically I believe she's doing okay, especially since all her tests came back normal during her annual vet check in June, but things have been happening that are making me suspicious that somethings not right.

It's like her obedience training is running in reverse. She's not listening to simple commands (I often have to repeat myself) and some tricks she pauses as if she has to think about what I said.

She's becoming more aggressive to other dogs while on leash.

The other day, just as we were getting ready to leave for Andys, she got in her crate and no matter what I said she would not come out. I finally had to pull her out and I said sternly, "I said come." She literally shriviled to a whimpering pile, tail between her legs, ears back and eyes wide, afraid. She had a "Please don't hit me" look. I've never laid a hand to her and cannot fathom why she'd react this way. She ran to the front door and cowered.

I sat and cried and she would not come near me.

When I go to my parents house, more and more, she refuses to leave. My dad has to lead her to the door and even then, it's a struggle to get her into the car.

I'm beginning to think that Kia no longer wishes to live with me or... gods forbid, loves me.

I just don't know what to do.

I don't want her to get away with things she shouldn't do, but everytime I raise my voice sternly, she freaks out.

I want my puppy back.

How scary for you, Kim! I'm so sorry the Kia is going through this. I wish I had some ideas ofhow to help. Maybe a phone call to the vet, or even MSU? Other then a delayed affect of the pro-heart I can't imagine what might cause her to act so different. Has she been acting like she is feeling okay...eating and drinking normally, etc?

Her appetite is wonderful and she drinks plenty of water.

It's so puzzling and frustrating. Not sure if my normal vet would be able to help since she seems fine physically.

Maybe a call to MSU would be good. Can't imagine how much a cat scan might cost...

I think a cat scan may be in the range of $1000

Maybe there is a medicine they can suggest to try without doing a scan? I am not not usually one to treat the symptoms without finding the cause, but in some cases the treatment may be the same, regardless.

I'll be racking my brain trying to come up with suggestions for your poor girl

I can understand how helpless,scared and frustrated you

Maybe you should mention this change of behavior to
your vet.

Kimmy, I do hope you can get some answers. What disturbing behavior from sweet Kia. You may need to first rule out any medical issues, then even talk with an animal behaviorist to find out how you can "re-train" Kia to desensitize her to these things. I hate it for both of you. I wish I had some simple answers for you, but I'd bet if anyone can get to the bottom of this, it is you. Blessings to both of you.

I am so upset to hear all of this! thats awful that your baby is having problems.. it almost sounds like there is like a *short* in the brain,, causing confusion.... it sounds neurological to me for sure,, Can you take the your baby to a teaching hospital where you might be able to get the cat scan done for free??

Oh Kimmy i am in tears reading this, i am so sorry Kia is not acting like her usual self. Yes i would have a talk to your Vet and see what they suggest. I will keep both you and Miss Kia in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear that Kia continues to have a problem like
this. I'm sure it must be as scary for poor Kia as it is for those
who love her. Do you know if Kia still experiences seizures
at all ? I've heard that a seizure can be as short as even a few
seconds. Some might be hard to spot. I will keep you & Kia in
my thoughts & prayers that an answer is found and she can be
helped to get better. Maybe Kia could be seen be a canine
neurologist at the Michigan Vet school. I'll be praying for a good
outcome for your beautiful girl. Let us know how things go.

I'm so upset to hear this Kimmy It must be devastating to see such a change in Kia's behavior, especially acting so stragnely toward her mommy Definitely, do what you can to rule out all the possible physiological causes first. I was thinking the same thing as Liz, that perhaps she might be experiencing small (petite mal) seizures which can be barely detectable and last only seconds. Anything new in her life that might be causing her added stress? If nothing appears to be going on with her physically, perhaps a behaviorist can help you sort all of this out. She has had mini seizures (two that I've personally witnessed). It was simply that her legs were shaking for a period of time and she had no control over them. She was aware of it and would just stare at her legs and look at me totally confused.

It wouldn't surprise me if she was having mini seizures that were pretty much undetectable.

I just wasn't sure if the overall effects of seizures were similar to strokes.

I can deal with her not listening to me and can try to not take her acting fearfully towards me personally. If anything, it's the agression on a leash that's worrying me. She's shown no agression towards people thankfully, but I watch her like a hawk.

I wish I could blame this on the stress of the wedding plans, but she was acting funny before the proposal.

How frightening and distressing Kimmy . I wish I had suggestions and ideas to share, but right now I really can't think of anything. I just wanted to offer my support and tell you Kia is in my thoughts, I'll be praying that you find answers and that something can help this. It made me feel teary-eyed just reading your description of her odd behavior

I know that after my Dad had his seizures (he had cancer and it had moved to his brain) there was quite a difference in his actions, attitude - pretty much some of the same things you are describing with Kia. From what I read up on humans - it can change your everyday behaviour.....


My Dad would get confused, mad etc. at the drop of a hat for no real reason. But as time wore on - he did get back to more of his old self - and that is my hope for you and Kia. Be patient with her and know that she is just trying to get those brain synapsis working again....... You are both in my (and my boys) thoughts and prayers........keep us posted please?!
