    I'm new to Yorkie rescue

I'm new to the United Yorkie Rescue and today picked up my first rescue. His name is Bear. He's two years old and from what I can see has a wonderful personality for what he's been through. He's been through 3 owners in his short life. They just kept passing him off - why you ask? Well, he bites. I know - he bit me.

My first question was why does he bite? So off to the vet we go. This poor baby has the worst dental problems my vet has ever seen in a dog this young. And he has two luxating patellas. His left is the worst the vet has seen in years and his right isn't much better. I'd bite too if I was in that much pain.

He's had his shots, but evidently not much more. Rather than deal with the issues the dog has, they just passed him off.

Why do people do this to these sweet beings? I know I'm doing the right thing saving him, but right now I'm so mad I'm near tears for this gentle creature.

No need to respond, but I just had to get it off my chest. Thanks!

    Well, here's my foster Bear.

He looks pretty bad, but I won't bathe him yet since he has a habit of biting me.

We've had a medical evaluation to show that there is no medical reason for his biting. I have a trainer coming this afternoon to discuss his behavior.

He's scheduled to be neutered and have his teeth cleaned/pulled on Thursday. He still needs to have his luxating patellas done, but we're waiting for a while on that.

I'm sorry to say that the behaviorist (who was bitten twice while at my home) has determined that Bear has issues that could not be helped with training. He has progressively became more aggressive toward me, Dick and our dogs.

Bear was sent to the Rainbow Bridge this morning with Dick and I at his side.

    RIP Bear!

Thank you. I'm still feeling so guilty yet I know that there was nothing more that I could do.

    Part of the assessment reads:

"He not only snarls and lunges at any person/dog close but he goes after them in a vicious, dominant aggressive fashion. He does not stop! (even with the person/dog retreating) He attacks and continues to attack until you can get him in a kennel. There is no fear."

    and

"He became quite aggressive with me during the visit. It was centered around one of his toys and his space. I was near his toy with no intentions of reaching for it and he went off. This was not fear aggression. His attack was every bit of the vicious display that had been verbally described. He attacked with bites and a relentlessness of attack that indicated he would not stop on his own accord and was kenneled immediately."

    The final protocol was:

"The management and training for this dog would be a daunting task. You cannot be "normal" with him. Every interaction must include strict obedience and intense management. Rehoming Bear is a high risk option and not one I would recommend. His bites are level 1-3 and it is only a matter of time that he escalate to those final levels. The dog is definitely a liability. He is extremely dysfunctional and/or a neurological malfunction. One cannot guarantee that extending his timeline to work on issues will produce appropriate improvement."

I knew that I could not keep him here - my dogs were terrified of him and I was so afraid that if I rehomed him, he would bite a child. I could not live with the thought of him harming a child emotionally and physically.

    RIP Bear
