Traps

Hi!
Around here there are Alot of homeless cats. I have seen 10 in one month!

But I cannot do anything about it.. I have tried luring them to help them, and bring them to a shelter but whenever I try to get them near me they run for dear life. lol

As winter approches I really Do NOT want these poor kitties to be out in the snow and cold.

Where can I get traps cheaply? Or rent them?

Crystal, I can't believe no one has responded until now. There are so many knowledgeable Pet Talkers on this subject. I'm sure they will see this soon and offer up some great advice.

All I can come up with is try to contact your local Humane Society to see if they can lend you some traps.

Welcome to Pet talk and thanks Slick for responding to this post! 1st- where are you? Rural or urban? Are the cats in an abandoned house, a field, what exactly? You can't just start trapping willy nilly. The reason is because you could trap a nursing mother and accidently leave her babies vulnerable to predators (predators include tom cats when food is scarce). You don't say if you saw all these cats in one area or several. The best thing to do in either situation, if possible, is establish a regular feeding time. Put out some hard cat food, and make a call. put the food where people and their walking dogs won't eat it. Call for them the same way every day at the same time. they will get used to this after a couple of weeks and this will be your trapping time. Obviously, you want it to be a time of day with least amount of traffic, people etc. More quiet means more success and more bonding with them. That time just before dark is nice except in high crime areas it is scary. In that case, I and jan have gone at 4 or 5 am when all the drug dealers are sleeping but cats are up! when we are together, in evenings, we feel ok, but even then it is scary. You are the one who knows what the areas are like so let us know what you think! Right now, just start them on a regular feeding schedule, wright down colors, males, females, kittens, who looks pregnant, who looks to be nursing etc! You really don't want to catch a nursing mother! It can be deadly for the babies. I found out the hard way that a pregnant cat looks exactly like a nursing cat!
