My 4 year old dog finally got neutered

Yesterday my half rottweiler/half german shepherd FINALLY got neutered at the age of 4. He was out of it and barely moving when he came home. He has to wear a cone on his head for a couple days so he can't lick his wounds. When I saw him I cried a little out of sympathy for him. I just have some questions:

    1. Is he depressed? Do dogs have feelings? Or do they just have senses (like hearing, seeing, smelling, etc)?

    2. He's on pain killers. Is he way weirded out right now? He seems pretty normal for the most part now (on day 2 since the surgeory).

    3. Does he know a body part is missing? Is he at a loss?

    4. Finally, is this harder for him at age 4 to have this done than it would've been if he had it done as a puppy?

CONGRATS ON GETTING THE RESPONSIBLE THING DONE!!! yES,,, PETS HAVE FEELINGS... THYE POSSESS ALL THE SENSES THAT WE DO.

LIKE WITH ANYONE OR ANY ANIMAL,, MEDS CAN BE POWERFUL AND MAKE YOU BEHAVE UNLIKE YOURSELF.... DONT WORRY,,, ITS FINE!

    3. Does he know a body part is missing? Is he at a loss?

i SERIUOSLY DOUBT THE FACT HE HAS BEEN ALTERED WILL IN ANYWAY MAKE HIM FEEL LESS A AHEM,,, GUY!!!

SURGERY IS SURGERY,, NO MATTER THE AGE,,, IT MIGHT TAKE HIM A WEE BIT LONGER TO RECOUP,, BUT THATS NORMAL.....

RELAX,,,,, EVERYTHING IS FINE FROM WHAT YOU HAVE TOLD US SO FAR.

Congratulations on getting your pet neutered.

He is probably not feeling very well and a bit sore too.
He also might be groggy still from the anesthesia.

My Rocky was neutered and he never noticed any
    missing body parts.

My personal opinion is that surgery seems to be easier
on young dogs. Young dogs seem to bounce back
    faster. (Just my personal opinion)

Congratulations on getting your dog neutered!

We didn't have our rottie Angus neutured until he was 10 and he never noticed any parts missing
He was very groggy still the next day, but bounced back just fine so I wouldn't be worried.

Do you have any pictures of your dog that you can share with us? I'd love to see him

I hope your baby is better today, Sherry. I don't think it is depression at all, more getting over the anesthesia and the pain. I've only experienced neutering with a male cat, but he milked it for all it was worth and lounged on my bed for a week afterward!!! LOL!!!!

Check in and let us know how it goes, and thank you for doing the right thing and neutering your boy.

    Update on my dog

My dog, Jake, is now running around more but we still have to keep the cone on his head until it heals all the way. Thanks for the support, everyone!

My roomate, who is the technical owner of the dog, said animals don't have feelings like depression, etc. I found that hard to believe.

I don't think dogs have *all* the feelings we do--or rather, at the same level of complexity--but I do believe they can feel depressed, jealous, anxious, etc. For example, if your dog wants to play with you, and you tell him "no," he may feel disappointed, but I doubt he goes through the same analyzing of his feelings that a human might, e.g. "But why DOESN'T she want to play with me? What did I do wrong?"

Hope all is well with Jake!
