Any idea about seizures?

I rescued my American Staffordshire Terrier, Nina, about 2.5 yrs ago. She was severely under weight, heartworm positive, and had major infections from just giving birth 2 weeks before but not nursing or getting the vet care she needed. Since then, she is now 55lbs. up from 23lbs when we found her, has had the heartworm treatment and now tests negative and seems to be in great shape. She seems to have these weird little seizures where she starts continuously clicking her teeth together and drooling for about 30 seconds or so then she just moves on like nothing ever happened. Does anyone know anything about this?

Dogs can have epilepsy, talk to your vet. Some people here have dogs on medication for it, but it does vary dog to dog!

We used to have an old dog that suffered from seizures.
She eventually had to be put on meds.
(do not remember what kind of med.)
I agree with Karen, talk to your vet about it.
You did a wonderful kind act by rescuing Nina.

My dog to has seizures, they only happen every 2 months or so, but they are scary, I can't barely watch her have them, it makes me cry!

Welcome to Pet Talk! Your Nina is beautiful! Bless your heart for giving her a caring and loving home Epilepsy is common in dogs and very treatable. Do ask your vet about appropriate treatment; several drugs are commonly prescribed and very effective. There are a few great support forums available on line too! I'll try and find them for you! We have a few doggies on PT that suffer from epilepsy. Hopefully a few will chime in...humans, not the pups Please keep us updated. We'd love to see more pics of your precious Nina and of course, we want to know how she's doing!

Well like what everyone else is saying,, sounds like she has epilepsy,,, I suggest Pet health ins as meds can get pricey,, but hey,,, dont panic yet,, or ever for that matter,,, it isnt painful to them to the best of my knowledge,, they just come out disoriented for a bit,, sometimes they dont even know they had one,,,, its harder on us moms and dads,,, speak with the Vet!!!

I see its been awhile since your post hope everything is ok. It sounds as if your dog has petit mal seizures, in other words small seizures, but none the less frightening. One of my doxies is on medication for seizures, he had a grand mal seizure, in other words a big seizure, and his would not stop, they can be life threatening. He takes phenobarbitol 2x a day, his meds cost 10 dollars for a months supply. One of my other doxies also has seizures, but his are only a couple of times a year, so it can vary, just like with people. Please let us know how your dog is, ok? thanks but cosmo had a huge major seisure the night before we could meet him and died....

We are now adopting another dog from the same family only she doesnt have ep... but she is partially blind....

I am so sorry, please do not let having seizures stop you from getting a pet with one, I did not know that mine would have seizures but I love them with all my heart. and seizures are treatable, but should not be ignored. Joannie

I agree,,,, medical ailments dont dissuade me in the least,, I mean,,,, gee,, look at me,, I tried to adopt cosmo,, he was totally blind and had Ep,,,, didnt work out,,, now I am adopting a Sibecross with glauchoma, one eye blind completely ,, the other okay,, for now,,,, PLUS she was horribly abused ,,, So I think with her and my surrent dog Lucy,, my hands will be full for the next few years!!!!

Bless you for taking on this responsibility, they are just another family member that needs your help. People are always amazed that I do what I have done for my boyz,with all their illnesses and medications that I have to give them every day. Now my poor baby Patches has pachydermatitis[Im going to check it out on the internet] Joannie and the boyz

Thank you all so much for the support and the information that you have provided. I have scheduled a vet appt. for Nina Bug next week and I will let you all know how it goes. Hopefully it isn't anything big and they can just provide a medicine that will help.

Cute dog! My dog has never had a seizure but my best advice to everyone who has a problem with a dog is to go to the vet. They know what they're doing and will tell you what to do. Good luck!
