1 Dead, 5 Wounded In Weekend ShootingstheKCRAchannel.com8:43 a.m. PDT July 26, 2004 - A young mother was killed and five other people wounded early Sunday when shots were fired near the scene of a suspected street race.

Authorities said a driver flagged down an ambulance just after 1 a.m. in south Sacramento. In the back seat of the car, paramedics found a 6-month-old boy and his mother, 16-year-old Deera Viana Torez, who had been shot in the head.

"The driver was in the front seat, he wasn't aware of what had happened in the back seat until he looked back and saw she wasn't responding," Sacramento police Lt. Gina Hayes said.

Police said Torez died instantly. The baby was not injured.

Officers traced the shooting back to the scene of suspected street race at an industrial park several miles away.

Five other people showed up at area hospitals with gunshot wounds -- one of them remained in critical condition early Monday.

Investigators said they found at least a dozen shells at the scene, but they're still trying to determine what may have led to the shooting.

For one, that 16 year old girl is to young to be a mother. She was a child herself. Secondly, she was out in the ghetto at a race at 1am with her baby?! Where in the hell are her parents?

Her parents are either dead, in jail or too doped up to care I would immagine...unless she was a run away and now they have to deal with the pain of thier child being dead over something really stupid. In any case, its just sad...

the driver didn't know what happened till he looked in the backseat and saw she wasn't responding.
He didn't hear a bullet go through a window or, if the window was open, her head? No sound at all? Is that believable?

Another article came out since then...The driver was the father of the girl's baby. And supposedly, a bunch of people fired shots in the air to break up the race and the shots came down and hit all of those people.
