    For Siamese Owners

Can you tell me about siamese cats...I have done numerous searches on the internet and don't come up with answers to my questions. I have heard stories of siamese being more of a naughty cat that gets into trouble or that they can have a snooty snippity attitude about them and only want to be with you on their own terms. Is this true?? Are siamese not very affectionate?? There is an oppurtunity for me to adopt a siamese from a shelter that has many many kittens....it is so adorable but I am not sure about their attitudes. I have a domestic Long Haired Black one year old cat named Maya who we love very dearly...we want another cat, it doesn't necessarily have to be best friends with Maya but I would like the two of them to live together peacefully. Can that happen with a siamese?? ANy info about their attitudes and behaivor would be wonderful!!
    Thanks!!!

I never like to generalize breeds into one lump category since there are sooo many different unique personalities among individuals ... but here I go anyway

I've never known Siamese to be bad around other cats at all. We get a lot of Siamese and Siamese mixes at the shelter and I am friends with the woman who runs the Siamese rescue here in my city, so I've seen tons of Siamese cats through the years. The only ones I've really seen who had aggressive attitudes were those that were declawed .. so they definately had their reasons!

Siamese are very vocal and can be independent, but I think I've met way more affectionate Siamese cats than independent ones.

I think you should go to the shelter and spend several hours visiting with the cat so you can make sure you like the personality. Any cat you bring home, Siamese or not, will require an adjustment period with your cat anyway. If you need help on how to introduce cats properly, just ask

    Hi,

    Welcome.

I foster for Siamese rescue. I think the majority of things you hear about Siamese are myths.

I have very loving Siamese here. Bella is permanantly attached to my chest.

I have a baby foster, Bacio, who is SO snuggly and needs his lap time everyday.

Things that are true, but not in every cat:

They can be vocal. (some are not)

They need attention (like the other breeds like Abys) (some don't need attention)

They bond strongly to a person. (they can feel betrayed if they lose their person)

Siamese mixes don't have as strong a tendency toward anything, as a purebred does (not in all cases)

If you want to check out the leading authority on Siamese look at siameserescue.org

Feel free to email Siri, the director of the Virginia center. She knows more specifically about Siamese than possibly anybody.

There is also a Texas Siamese rescue.

    Meezers are nice!

Thank you so much for the info...

I had thought that those stories were probably myths and that it would depend on the particular cat rather then the entire breed but I just wasn't sure. Even the shelter was telling me of these stories.

I really would not mind a cat that was very vocal...I actually think that is cute. And I am a stay at home mom so I can give it lots of attention. I just wanted to make sure that they were not snobby snippy cats

I have seen many siamese owners on this board so I knew this would be a perfect place to get answers before I go out and adopt her. Thanks Much!!

Our Yoshi is a Flame-Point Siamese and he is not snooty at all, as a matter of fact he is just the oppisite........extremly friendly and very curious.

Yes there are times that he is a handful and into everything, but so were my other two.

To me cats have different personalities, just like us humans

    Hi and welcome

We have two Siamese, a Burmese and a Tonkinese (the Burma and Honky Tonk are half Siamese in origin).

They are all social, well adjusted cats who all have their own space, but also spend a lot of time curled up in one big kitty lump and on our laps

Yes, they can be vocal! We have long and rambling mow, meow, wah, waaaah conversations most days. I have managed to work out which sound means pet me and which means feed me now please mother, but the rest, well, I'm not privileged enough to have been given the whole language of meezer!

I think temperament is an individual thing. With the meezers I'd say a medical check is the most important thing. Congenital heart problems are still an issue with the breed so a good vet check is essential before taking a baby home. If Maya is one year old, I think it's a great age to introduce another kitty to your household, hint hint

    Best wishes

I have a siamese cross ... and she is just adorable!!

I have heard many things like that about siamese cats as well .. I think the bulk of it is just talk. I can't have a big say simply because my cat is not a pure bred siamese, but she has some of it in her.

Lily is super friendly and loves to play .. she's extremely active. She loves getting attention and scritchies all the time, and occasionally does the "rub against the leg" thing. She rarely asks for anything, not even food. So in other words she's not as loud and as talkative as people say siamese are. She loves viisting new places, she's very adventerous, but don't like other animals she's not familiar with. She hisses and/or swats at other kitties she don't know!

At Siamese rescue, they do say that the Flame Point boys are especially sweet and mushy.

I also left out that he is a BIG time mamma's boy Our special time together is after dinner while watching evening TV, I hold him like a baby for several hours Fluffy & Lucky get very upset at times, and that is when you have to do a balancing act with 3 kitties in your lap.............2 @ 20 lbs

Our RB Ernie was half Meezer - and probably the biggest lovemuffin we have had!! He was my daughter's (Sirrahsim-Missy's) velcro-kitty. He was, however-extremely vocal and sounded like a newborn infant - especially when we were so rude as to leave a door closed that he did not want closed!

Did Ernie think he was human too?? Yoshi thinks that the rules were made for his brothers only ...NOT him, because he is the Prince of the house

of course not! Like Yoshi, he knew that he was far superior to lowly hoomans! (and siblings, apparently)

    Catmandu-

I'd like to know more about those Meezers of yours.

The two pictures of the Torties are two separate cats? They look so similar.
(lower left and 2nd from top right)

What are their names and who are the 'talkers'?
