    Memory cards for digital cameras...

I was wondering what memory cards for digitals actually do? Do they just store more pictures??

I was wondering if I would need to get one....because they are like $90.

Could someone explain what they are for?

Im sure I'll have tons more questions when I get the camera

    11 DAYS!!!!!

    RIP Jasper. I can't believe you're gone.

The one that comes with the camera only holds about 16 good quality pics, I think. Oh, and I've had my camera for almost a year and didn't know what that macro feature was. It takes great close ups! I was so happy to learn that. And here I thought I had studied my camera booklet....... You'll want to get another one. Go to Ritz camera. The cards are cheaper there. I've got one that holds 175 full size pics. It's great!

I'd definately get a bigger memory card if you can afford it. The memory card I got with my camera was 16mb. I can't remember how many it holds but it wasn't too bad. Then I found a sale and snatched a 256mb card for $80.

I bought an additional 128 MB card for 29,90 Euro (ca. 35 US$).

You will need it if you go for a weekend and want to take quite some pics

How many it holds can also depend on the megapixels of your camera.

My mother is lucky because she has an older cam so the memory cards are really really cheap now. Her 256 on her cam holds near 200 pix What kind of cam are you getting? Be careful when shopping for a card cause you don't want to spend $80 on something that doesn't work! My mum went through that when she first got her cam lol....

The camera's memory only holds a FEW pictures. The memory card holds alot more, depending on the number of MB's it is. When I bought my Kodak digital camera, I was fortunate in that I worked for a newspaper and had friends in the photo department. When I left to move to Michigan, I was given two 256 MB disks. My friend said, "Take very good care of these disks, as one disk alone is worth MORE than the camera!!!"

Get a disk that has as many Megabytes as you can afford. It's well worth the expense!!

    Well to answer some questions...

Im getting a FUJI FINEPIX A330 DIGITAL CAMERA and it has 3.2 mega pixels and it says it has xD memory expansion...which means???

Also does it matter what kind of memory card I get?? Does it have to go with the camera??

The memory card that's the same name as my camera is $90 and it says.....
"Fuji xD 128MB picture cards are extremely compact and very economical. They are almost half the size of other memory cards yet hold 16x the capacity"

I can get a Fuji 64MB picture card for $60, how many pictures would that hold?

How many pictures do each one hold?? Can you tell?

Sorry for all the questions have never owned a digital camera, can you tell?

    RIP Jasper. I can't believe you're gone.

Hmm, I'm not sure how much 64mg is. I had an 8mg that came with it that held like 12 good quality pics.I now have a 250 (or 60??) mg one that holds 410 good quality pics. I'm not sure how to tell though...I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with it though

I have 3 separate memory cards, how did I get so many?? One is 16 megabytes, another is 32 megabytes, and the other one is 54 megabytes. I would really rather have one 256 megabyte. *dreams of a larger memory card*

I wonder if one of these would fit in my head!

Here's a picture of the different memory cards:

XD is a type of memory card. Some other types are Compact Flash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, MultiMediaCard and Secure Digital. You have to stick with XD cards but you don't have to stick to the brand. For example, when I got my Canon, it came with a 16mb Compact Flash Canon card. The camera can only use Compact Flash cards but whether it's a Canon brand card or not, it'll work just the same.

According to this place, a 64mb card should hold about 107 pictures at the highest setting. If you take the pictures at the lowest setting, you can get even more out of the card. On my card, I can get 868 pictures on the biggest resolution (1600x1200), 1389 at 1024x768 and 2719 at 640x480. So obviously, it would be nicer to get a bigger sized card but if you don't have a lot of space and need to take lots of pictures, the lowest setting will allow you to take more pictures.

    Okay thanks so much!!

Im not going to take huge pictures anyway, so for now, a smaller one will do, I'll get a bigger one when I take care of all Jasper's alergy tests(which could be another $450++) and all that other stuff

Is there a diffence in the quality of the photo? I mean the smaller the setting? Like on mine, the 64 megabyte one says 398 photos, on the smallest setting. Mine is a Canon.

Just remember to use the good quality pics when taking some you think you might want to print out. Because the smaller the file size, the poorer quality they will be and might not print out nicely.
