Baby bird Rescue but has birthdefect!!HELP

I found a baby bird on the golf course next to my house and I am not really sure what kind of bird it is.It was abandoned from what I can tell from watching for its parents for over 2hours.I also have learned that its tongue is not in the right place,rather it is on the bottom of its beek.It can Move it but I fear it may cause some sort of problem later on in life though.I have fed the baby cut up worms and milk mixed with a little brown bread.Hope that is ok for the bird.I called a local Vet office and they told me if I can keep it alive for the next couple of days that the local college has a Private rehibilitation facility I can take it to.However I need a little help on keepn it alive and well.Any info would be most welcome.The bird has feathered but not fully and its eyes are open and lookn around for help.Here are some Pics of the baby bird.Look closely under the beel and you can see its tongue.

This is the first time I have seen this post, Leslie. The way I done, when Stubby brought in a baby bird at this age, was I fed it raw hamburger meat, whole wheat bread, berry, leaves and then. It done really good on that diet, and finally was able to be turned loose.

I think this is what really got me to loving birds, its name was Charlie too, like my Cockateil. I wanted a bird that I could pet, and keep. Since I couldn't keep a wild bird, I had to have the cockateil.

Unfortunately the little one died.I believe that it is very possible that the bird had internal injuries from being pushed out of the next or from birth.I believe this is so mainly because after the first day he/she really perked up and was responding well to the food.He/she's tongue did not seem to bother the young one at all.
I know that I cant stand to lose animal,definately one this young and helpless but I know had he/she lived most likely the bird would not be able to live in the wild due to the tongue defect.That would most likely cause the bird to choke or catch infection.I really hoped to get the bird into the Program at the Local University,just needed the little one to hang on a few more hours so I could get the info on where the facility was located but
