I can't imagine what that family is going through.

Wow, that's terrible.I wonder how well behaved the dog had been previously. I hope the little girl makes it and isn't completely traumatized by the experience. She's young, though, so, it may not even be a memory she keeps. I know a girl that was attacked by a dog when she was about four and doesn't remember it, and, has never had a fear of dogs. Hopefully, it's the same for this girl.
Thanks, Dogz!

I read this earlier also. I was looking up articles on the Derby and came across this. I just can't imagine the horror and pain this family must be going through. I too hope the child doesn't remember this. So sad.![]()

Oh, that poor little girl! I just can't imagine how terrified that little thing must have been, and what the mother must of thought when she seen the sight of her little girls head in that dogs mouth! Oh, my god this is so sad, I just hope this little girl will be okay.

Thank You, kittycats_delight for my new siggy!!!
Poor little girl!I do hope she'll be alright.
Not sure if she'll forget it though..........I got attacked by a dog at 4, and have never gotten over the fear of certain large breeds. I still remember that moment of fear so clearly. I was only 4, but such traumatizing things are sometimes never forgotten.

Hello forum members;
What a tragic story. I don't know the breed at all, but I know their reputation as guard and protection animals. They are also know to be gentle around family. I have witnessed dogs tied 24/7 almost, and walk up to this dog and he will bite!Sad story, really sorry to hear about something as tragic like this.

I'd like to know more about his previous behavior, too. I mentioned it in my first post. I mean, I wonder why he was chained up in his own backyard? Maybe it wasn't fenced in, but, I was under the impression that it was, just because the children were left unsupervised. It just seemed odd to me that the dog was chained up on top of being in a secure area. Unless he was an escape artist and was always getting out of the yard. All I can say is, if those parents had even an inkling of an idea that their dog may be agressive, then shame on them. and, what guilt they'll have to deal with, if that's the case. Ugh. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, though, because I don't know them or their dog, but, I wish there were some way we could get more information. I'm just sorry that that had to happen to all involved, including the dog that had to be killed. It's just sad all around.![]()

Regardless of how the dog had behaved in the past, what responsible parents would leave a 3 and a 4 year old to play outside unsupervised????
The words "Chained in the yard" really stood out to me. It sounds like the pup may have been a neglected outdoor dog.Poor family, poor pup.
Thank you Wolf_Q!
My mom lives in Kentucky and first heard about this on the news. The story she heard was a little different than this one.
1. The dog was an outdoor dog. He lived in a dog house in the back yard. This article doesn't mention that, but it might explain a lot.
2. The mother never tried to help the girl. She screamed at the dog to let go of her, then drove to a neighbor's house a mile or two down the road. Again, this didn't make it into this article.
No matter which story you choose to believe, you can't help but wonder how neglected the dog was. I was under the impression that the dog lived outside all the time and probably only rarely saw his people.![]()
It's not making the mother look good. Does anyone know how old she is? And, who the heck is going to expect a pit bull with apparently no socialization and no attention and probably no training not to be that way? Ugh, stupid people. I just still don't get why anyone would have a dog just to tie it up. But, you shouldn't have kids, either, if you're just going to throw them outside to fend for themselves. It sounds like killing the dog may have actually put him out of his misery. I'm still trying to give the benefit of the doubt. I try really hard not to judge people I don't know, or think too badly of them, because media is not always truthful......But, it's hard not to be annoyed at the apparent neglect of both the girls and the dog.![]()

Any dog not trained or socialized properly can be a danger. She probably got the dog and chained it outside hoping to ward off "dangerous people".
