    same sex marriage info

    Hi everyone,
this thread is not meant to be a debate, rather it is a request for confirmable information. For my Sociology class I have to write an 8-10 page research paper on same sex marriages and I am trying to find the best, most OBjective resources that I can. I would love if it was an opinion paper.I have lots to say on the topic, but since it is not, I need as much info and statistics as I can get to cram into the paper. Do you know of any good resources? I would prefer if they were unbiased, but I know that no resource is completely unbiased. Thanks for any help you can offer!

and just to satisfy the need to argue that so many visitors to the dog house have, I will state my position on the issue. However, please do not reply unless you have *data* that I can use thanks a bunch.

I think that if two people of the same sex wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, and buy each other rings, and have a legal ceremony, and have all the same legal rights than that's all well and good. But the thing that I and many many other Americans will NEVER be ok with is for same sex "marriages" to be referred to as "marriages". Perhaps they can come up with an entirely new word that's all cool and PC, but until that happens, don't even dare try to put the label of "marriage" on the union of two members of the same sex. it is nothing short of disrespecting the TRUE marriage that can only be shared between one man and one woman

*crreeeeeak* the can of worms has been opened.
please remember, my opinion is irrelavant to this paper that I am working on. PLEASE don't give me opinions, give me verifiable, scientific data.

See if your local library has a book called "Biological Exuberance". It is an excellent book, very well written, about homosexuality seen in nature....in THOUSANDS of species of animals....proving that it is indeed a perfectly natural part of life. I know you're writing on human sexuality, but I've found this book to be a valuable resource in my sociology of human sexuality class. Good luck!

    Thank you Wolf_Q!

Um...don't you think that is a trifle bit unfair to make such an inflammatory statment about what you and "many many other Americans..." believe, but then say we can't give OUR opinions?

That is like saying, "Well, I think you all are a bunch of idiots, but, your opinion of me is not allowed to be mentioned..."....come on, surely you don't really expect people to not respond with opinion? I don't know where you got your 'statistical data' to support what "many many Americans..." feel..but, I am surely American and do NOT support that statment about marriage! Anymore than I support the term 'marriage' for the two people that are legally wed, yet the husband beats the tar out of the female time after time after time. Marriage means alot of things to alot of people.

If you want 'verifiable, scientific data..' might I suggest you come to the table with it first? (and I am not sure how you will get verifiable, scientific data on such an intensely social issue....)

    I agree.
But, I won't say anymore since I don't have any 'advice' for you. I would do what WolfChan suggested.

If your opinion is so irrelavant to your paper, why did you feel it necessary to state it here and then tell everyone not to share theirs? Everything else you stated in your message is practically begging for a debate even though your first line is saying that that's not what you wanted. Even your statement about opening a can of worms is acknowledging that you're going to get a rise out of people. I'm just confused as to why most of your post needed to be posted, considering what you're asking for. And, I'm not giving any advice, opinion, or verifiable information on the topic, sorry.

Do a google on same sex marriage for Netherlands, Belgium, British Columbia or Ontario, as they have all ratified same sex marriage. Might have objective info that's based on legal footings.

This site has background info on the Dutch decision:

thank you WolfChan and Miss Meow, I will certainly check those things out

I'm not even really allowed to debate either side. I have to present the information that each side brings to the table in a very much unemotional way. For example, I am going to discuss the idea of homosexuality being genetic and I will present the scientific evidence (if there is any) for either side. I know, the paper sucks, but I want to keep my 4.0, so I have to play by my professor's rules.
