TOLEDO -- An abused dog has found a loving home. And the new owner says it's thanks to News 11. It's a story we told you about a month ago.
Cookie the dog was the target of paintball gun practice and she has a degenerative muscle disorder that has crippled her. But Cookie has been rescued. Robin Hicks said she first heard about it from News 11 about three weeks ago. "I started crying. I knew I had a lot of feelings for her," said Hicks.
After seeing Cookie, Robin couldn't stop calling the Wood County Humane Society. Robin wanted to adopt the cute 6 year old boxer-mix, despite the fact that the dog had been abused.
Shelter manager Renee Valtin says Cookie was surrendered by her owner. "Pretty much, the people didn't have much interest in caring for her. She was outside chained to a doghouse surrounded by water, being tormented by area children with paintball guns," said Valtin.
For the last month, veterinarians have been trying to figure out what's wrong with Cookie. "We always knew that something was wrong with her back legs, and it just kept getting worse over time, we think it's a degenerative muscular disorder," said Valtin.
To help Cookie get around, she was fitted with a special harness and a wheelchair. "I'd heard of other people trying this. So we did some research on the Internet and found a couple companies we liked. I could just tell by Cookie's personality that she would be wanting to use it," said Robin.
