Ooh, we have a lot of these dogs in Oregon. They actually have Coyote in them, which is why they look so exotic.

Yes, American indian dogs are a very interesting breed. They were actually almost extinct at one point. I believe there were only two dogs of the breed left. But they built a new breeding foundation and bred together several other breeds until they came up with dogs that looked and acted like the original American indian dog.

Actually that's incorrect. There were more than 2 dogs around. I have been to Song Dogs kennel, and in fact they are not too far away from me, when I went to aquire about one of their Desert Lynx kittens. They keep the traits by selectively linebreeding. In fact, the American Indian dog is that of wild coyote blood and the mix of several generations of domestic dogs, and each cannot be exactly pinpointed anyway. Song Dog started with two dogs, which his stock is based on, but he is not the only breeder in Oregon and the US. There are still many other dogs out there, not just the two he started with. I can see you just read his article lol.

I've been studying these dogs for awhile and have spoke to many breeders, as originally after stumbling onto their site when searching for their cats I found great interest in this breed, and we are planning on getting a pup from them sometime in the next couple of years.

Actually I didn't read the article lol. I read on a different site that back in...I believe the 60's or seventies there were only two or so left.

Even if there weren't two, they were almost extinct. They are still quite rare. According to another website I looked at, there are only 255 Indian dogs in the registry.

Saying they were almost extinct is really an inccorect term, as these dogs have so many different bloodlines etc. there are no "purebred" dogs so to speak. I was going to get a kitten from them until I found out that their "Bobcat" heritage could not be proven. There are many so called Desert Lynx breeders out there, but none that I truly believe. Anyways, back to the dogs. Hopefully after we buy our house (next month! Whoo hoo!) and if we can adopt Trixie we will consider getting a pup from them for certain purposes.


Maybe left in Oregon or the states, but that's not the only place these dogs occur, and since none of their lineage can be confirmed anyway (except for the modern bred ones) there is really no way of knowing how many exist or not.

Topaz and all those dogs are gorgeous! I thought she looked a mix of coyote/dog or fox/dog when I saw her.

Could be! I think Kia has that wild look from her mix of Husky and ACD (the only two that we know of). ACD's are decendent of the dingo after all... or so I've been told.
