I sort of need advice again

Okay guys, you've never let me down before, so I need your advice and vote again.

I talked to my friend today about Sydney's new home. Her friend lives with 3 other roommates in a renovated farm house. She said that her friend asked the other roommates about her adopting Syd. All of them but the male said yay!! The guy said he was allergic to cats.

My friend also told me that the guy didn't like cats. They were going to try and convince him to keep his door shut. But if Syd was allowed to roam the rest of the house, there would be cat hair everywhere.

I told my friend that that was it, Sydney wasn't going anywhere. If this one roommate didn't like cats, what's to stop him from opening the door "accidentally" and letting her out saying "Oh well!!"

I truly have Syndey's best interest at heart. It took me 2 weeks to trap her and she's been through quite an ordeal. My friend seemed VERY annoyed. She told me to think about it and she'd call me tomorrow.

Am I doing the right thing??

All I can say is that our rescue group requires that ALL members of a household AGREE on adopting the animal in question. And the best we can do is hope they do not lie.

I agree, don't let the cat go to a home where one person doesn't want her. "Allergic" is often code for can't stand cats.

The one absloute thing that we learn in life is that 99.9% of the time we wish we had our followed our instincts!! If your this unsure then your gut is probably trying to tell you the answer. If you don't follow your instincts you may be very sad and sorry later. I hope everything turns out the best for you and Sydney!

Donna, I would listen to my gut feelings and if you're not absolutely sure that this would be a great home for Sydney then I wouldn't let the woman adopt her. Since the man is allergic to cats, I really don't think it would work out. I'd hate for you to have to worry about Sydney all the time. She deserves a great loving caring home where everyone likes and wants cats. I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Good luck.

I think you did the right thing. A friend of mine let a roomate move in with a cat, after asking everyone else in the house if it was ok. One response was "well ok but I'm allergic and I don't like cats, but.. ok" Well, that guy tortured the cat (sprayed her with water ALL the time, kicked her out of his way, hissed at her when he knew it tormented her), to the point that she was terrified of him and was exhibiting anti-social behaviour. They ended up having to tell the cat hater to knock it off or move out (he did say ok, afterall) and he ended up leaving the house. They have since moved and no longer have roomates and the cat is doing great, but it was tense for a while there. At least my friend chose the cat over the stupid cat hater!!

I'm going with my instincts. She's going to stay with me. I'll probably end up adopting her myself since she's bonded with me. She's one great cat!!

I have to talk with the shelter about Baby Sara. I'm not sure if I will have to bring her back so people will get to see her. The only problem is if she stays with me, she'll have to stay in the spare room, because she's still only a baby and I'm afraid to expose her to Moo (he was exposed to FIP as a baby, although he doesn't HAVE the disease). I'd feel terrible if anything happened to her because of it.

My friend is NOT going to be happy, but I'm doing what is in the best interest of Sydney, I'm NOT try to win a popularity contest.

Thanks for your input guys!! You're the best!!

    Best home for Sydney

The best home for Sydney is someplace where she's wanted by everyone. That's not your friends place, right now. I have family members who are highly alergic to cats. There is just no way the roomate would be happy living with a cat. If he moved out, I guess I'd reconsider. It wouldn't be fair to him or to Sydney to be put in that situation. I'm glad you're keeping her for now. Hopefully your friend will understand.

I told my friend last night that her friend wouldn't be adopting Sydney. Actually I left a message because she wasn't home. I explained exactly why. I have decided to adopt Sydney myself after a while. I would never forgive myself if anything should happen to her because I didn't listen to my gut instincts.

Glad you decided to keep Sydney.

I just wouldn't let her go into that house, unless you could actually meet everyone and judge for yourself if the guy would be tolerant or if he'd "accidently" let the cat get out.

In lieu of what happened to that kitty you told me about in CT, I certainly think that it's a RED FLAG. You did the right thing.

I'm a little late in responding, but I think you did the right thing. The roomate not liking cats is definately a sign.
