both of my cats have suddenly decided that its alright for them to pee in the house. I can't figure out why they've started, they have always gone to their litter boxes. The second part of my comment is does anybody have a sure fire way to get the smell of cat pee out of carpeting? Any help would be appreciated.

A good way to get the smell out is mix a good amount of white vinegar and some lemon juice together and scrub it into the spot where your cats have peed. That's always worked for me.

The only time I've had a problem where my cats have decided to not use the litter box is when the litter box wasn't kept clean enough. If that's not the problem, I'm not sure. Maybe they decided they didn't like the type of litter you're using or something like that. If you clean out the littler box (I mean, totally empty and scrub it out) maybe that will help.

Try moving the litter box over the place where they go now. Unless there has been a change in the household that would upset them, I don't know why they would suddenly do this. Maybe a UTI?

Nature's miracle will work as well as Simple Solution. They have enzymes in them that eat the bacteria that causes the odor.

Natures Miracle works great for the smell. I would reccomend getting your kitties to the vet to rule out any possible illness. They might be trying to tell you something by peeing outside of the box. Peeing outtside of the litterbox is often a sign of illness even if they look healthy to you.

I would definitely recommend taking them to the vet, just in case. But has there been any major changes in the household (e.g. new furniture, new skin kid). Some cats are particularily "sensitive" to changes in their environment.

I have used Nature's Miracle before, but I have also found that Woollite produces a pet stain remover that works quite well (and is available at your local Walmart). Try and keep them away from the area until the soluntion dries and the smell is gone.

How old are your kitties? If they are males that have just now become sexually mature, that could be a cause for this sudden change. (especially if they are BOTH doing it)

Next step is to think of anything that might have changed: Type of litter, placement or type of litter box, new furniture or new layout of furniture, are the boxes dirty or is the level of the litter too low?, new person in the household?, new animal in the household?, stray cats outside that your cats sense?, anything?!

And remember, a lot of times it is a medical condition so make sure you have themn checked.

Wal-mart has an enzyme cleaner in the pet section called OUT and I have used that with good results. But with any enzymatic cleaner you MUST SOAK the area, do not skimp.

my cats did this when they where young,but thats to be expected.they would go in sinks,on carpet,on the bed. finally i had them fixed and after a few weeks,it all stoped.has your cats been fixed,maby they are becomeing of age when they mark there territory to look for females. is there a female arround they could be reacting to,even one outside they may smell when they go outside? goode luck

They are suppose to be. I must also add that my little green clean machine is quite a blessing in cases like these.
