...and I thought I had it bad!

I just recently got a new puppy Weimeraner. He's a beautiful dog but has definitely provided challenges that I've received from no other dog I've ever owned.

I was speaking to a co-worker shortly after I got him. He told me I should have spoken to him about the Weimeraner's and warned me that although they were great dogs, they tend to test your limits. Of course, I found that out a little too late!

I've had Oliver (Ollie) now for roughly 4 months. I love him to death but just today had to agree with my co-worker that this breed puts you to the test more than I've ever experienced. Much, much more than my other dog, Jake who's a Corgi.

I sent the following e-mail to him:

    ************************************************** *
    Dave,

How the hell did you do it, man? This dog is THE most unruly dog I have ever had...and I've had a lot of dogs! He's a friggin wild man.

Seems to have the learning ability of a rock at this young age...unless it benefits him in a big way. He's taking the "kid" approach more and more lately. "I do nothing unless it's for me!"
    ************************************************** *

To which Dave replied a short time ago regarding his Weimeraner, Lew:

    ************************************************** *
I feel your pain brother. Weimeraner owner's are a close knit fraternity of people who are gluttons for pain. Here's a quick list if it makes you feel any better:

    Lew has....

    - Escaped at Manchester airport out of his kennel and ran out on the runway
    - Eaten 3 dog beds including the zipper on one (vet bill)
    - Jumped through a closed window (fortunately not hurt)
    - Lost half his ear to frostbite in ND because he refused to come inside after playing in the first snow of the season
    - Jumped into a barbed wire fence creating several holes in his chest (surgery)
    - Ate a water meter off the side of our house
    - Chewed through 2 seatbelts in the family automobile
    - Soiled our neighbors brand new couch
    - Gone to the bathroom and thrown up in every room of every house I've ever owned
    - Grabs all of my shirts off the hangers in my closet and builds a dog bed every day (see bullet 2 above)
    - I've been called on many occasions from local police stations after finding him in many different New England towns.

That's just the beginning! Enjoy your Weimeraner!
    ************************************************** **

Ollie and I are currently bonding in my office while I'm posting this story. I've decided that I have the best Weimeraner in the world with absolutley no complaints! I must have gotten the "Saint" of the breed...

Hope you enjoyed what I thought was one of the funniest e-mails I've ever received (with the exception of the surgery of course)

Hello! I don't know much about Weims, but I do think that they are one of the most beautiful dogs. It'll be probably 10-15 years before I get another dog (have 3 young ones right now), but weims are going to be one of my first choices.

p.s. one of the most insane things I've ever went though with a pet: My dog Rosco got stuck between our house and shed. We oiled him, tugged and pulled...we couldn't get him out for the life of us. We put a jack between the house and shed. (This was a 4 inch gap.) We only punctured a huge hole in our house. We finally got out a chainsaw and sawed a 4 foot by 4 foot hole in the shed wall. (We feared sawing Rosco.) This wasn't an ordinary shed, this was a nice, custom one that matched the house. Four hours later, we finally got Rosco out. Rosco is in heaven now, but whenever I look at the hole in the shed wall and the hole on the side of our house, I smile and think of him.

Beautiful dog, sstarace! Sorry he's testing your limits!

Tonya that's a hilarious story. I can picture you oiling up the dog and tugging. He must have crawled back there and then grown (hehe).

    Thanks for the siggy, Lexi_Lover!

Thanks to everyone for your welcome messages. This is the first time I've evern joined any such discussion boards and it's great to receive the feedback.

Yeah, Ollie's tested my limits, and I'll keep everyone posted on "his progress training me." I've done a lot of reading about them since the first day we saw him and had some understanding of what I was in for but not to the full extent.

I gladly take him as my own little personal challenge now. He's simply just a puppy and has a lot of energy as all of them do. But, he's "my boy" and just wants the attention as any child or puppy requires.

Thanks again for all your replies...

I love the Weims! I've heard they were one of the more difficult breeds to deal with because of their high level of energy, but wow! That's a lot of things that one distroyed! I do want a weim one day though!

I too love Weims, and after chatting to a breeder at Dog Obedience awhile back, his comments were ......

"The only difference between your Dalmatian and my Weim ..... is that my Weim doesn't have spots."

They apparently have very similar temperaments, and after all the "fun" I have been through with my 2 spots ....... I can feel your pain and will support you 100%!!!
    Just yell out ...
    M!
