How can people be so cruel?!

    *cries* My heart is breaking!

RICHMOND, Calif. (July 24, 2003) - House Rabbit Society (HRS), a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Richmond, is seeking information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a terrible act of animal cruelty that occurred this past week. While driving on Highway One south of San Francisco, two anonymous witnesses saw what appeared to be an animal thrown out of the window of the car ahead of them. After stopping to investigate, the people discovered that a very small, badly hurt and terrified black rabbit had in fact been thrown into traffic.

The witnesses picked the rabbit up and took her to a local shelter, where she was given morphine for her pain. Fully expecting the rabbit to perish, the shelter staff was shocked to see the tiny creature fighting for her life. The shelter contacted a local rabbit rescue group called Rabbit Haven (phone 831-440-0282), which cared for the rabbit over the weekend and arranged for her to be placed into foster care with HRS.

The rabbit, now named Samosa, is a very small lop-eared female, and she is suffering from serious skin abrasions. In addition to her injuries gained from the abuse on the freeway, she suffers from severe foot injuries likely caused from being constricted in wire cage. She is also nearly bald, with only patches of black fur remaining on her tiny pink body. Rabbit rescuer and HRS Executive Director Margo DeMello explains, "In cases of severe neglect, rabbits often pull out their own hair due to acute psychological distress."
The article is a little lengthy; if you'd like to read it click here. WARNING: There are some somewhat-graphic pictures at the very end. (The page does warn you and gives sufficient space between the end of the article/beginning of the pics.)

If you were going to contribute to the recent memorial fund and have yet to make your donation, please consider this little one!!

    I really don't know

I just hate it how people treat animals like a piece of trash!!!!

I am glad that Samosa is now recovering and I hope a great forever home can be found real soon.

    Disgusting!

Yes this is partiucularly awful.....I suppose they will NEVER find those jerks......who are manly enough to pick on something small and helpless and probably too much of a coward to face someone their own size.....

Something I have learned and truly believe......what goes around, comes around and those people ARE going to get theirs......

    Zips,
I couldn't read the article....but, want to respond to your rhetorical question, "how can people be so cruel?" They can't be. They aren't 'people', in the sense we are...this just reinforces the need for ALL of us to stand up, and be a voice for those that cannot speak.

Zippy, Just wanted to repeat what Cataholic has said. I firmly
believe that there is among us a group of "sub-humans" who
don't qualify for the term human (humane) . They somehow lack
the qualities of compassion & emphathy required to be a true
human being. I hope this little one finds a good place to be with
    Real human beings.

How can people (youre right the'yre not human) do this!!??? This kind of stuff breaks my heart, but more importantly makes me want to find a way to help animals in these kind of situations. I am a rabbit owner myself and will never let anything bad happen to my little Keifer. I am just sorry I wasn't there to help Samosa. But I am glad that she found someone.

    That's horrible!!

We have some freak in my neighborhood that hasn't been caught yet that likes to harm animals. I got the lovely notice in my mailbox yesterday from one of my neighbors. The headline reads Attention Possible Pet Mutilator. Evidently some poor cat got it's tail cut off and the vet said with such a precise cut, it was human inflicted. The notice also warns to be on the lookout because for those that harm pets, it's a short step to harming humans. I'd like to harm that *human* alright.

We all think it's horrible when we read those stories in the paper, but I'm just sick that there's a freak in my neighborhood doing this. None of my pets are allowed outside. I just hope that my next door neighbor brings her two adorable kitties inside for now.
