    Doggy tonsillitis??

My sheltie-spitz mix (1 1/2yr) has tonsillitis. He's on amoxicillen. Is tonsillitis something fairly common in dogs? Never dealt with this with our 13 yr old female golden nor with our cocker-lab mix who died in November. Thanks for any info on tonsillitis. Little Finny has allergies and is taking Benadryl and Prednisone since we rescued him from HUA in southeast Nebraska. Thank you.
(my first post on this site. I must remember to peek in here everyday. It's a great site.)

Welcome to Pet Talk!! I'm not too familiar with tonsillitis in dogs, but I see that Clara has posted some great info! I hope Finney gets well soon. And how wonderful that you adopted from HUA!! What an amazing rescue group! I also hope you'll stick around and become a "regular!" We'd love to get to know you and sweet Finney!! My name is Sandra and I have 2 dogs, 2 kitties and a guinea pig!

    Thank you

Thank you to both of you. I will check in often. Also thanks for posting the link about tonsillitis. You know, it says that if not caused by a bacteria (strep) tonsillitis can be caused by a stick lodging in the throat. That little Finny is always chewing on twigs. I better have that checked. I found out today that white grapes are harmful to dogs. I hadn't known that. I still have a lot to learn. After 13 years with dogs, I'm still learning every day.

I look forward to getting to know all of you and your pets. Oh and I'm so happy you've heard of HUA. They are great. We're keeping our fingers crossed that Finny's brother is adopted this weekend. (Remus) He is HUA's dog of the month and I think our neighbors here in Omaha are hoping to get him this weekend.

I'll read past threads and try to familarize myself with the pets and their parents.

A big Pet Talk welcome to you and Finney! Wow, an HUA alumnus! I found HUA around the same time I found Best Friends Animal Sanctuary! In my frustration over repeated, failed attemps to sponsor an HUA dog, I wound up talking with (for almost an hour) the husband half of the couple team that runs HUA. Sorry, I've forgotten his name What an amazing man! I hope brother Remus goes "home" with your neighbors! Wouldn't that be great! Finney and Remus could visit and continue to be buds! And like you, despite being a dog Mom for all of my life, I continue to learn and then learn some more, about dogs!! Pet Talk has been invaluable in making me a better, more educated and responsible dog guardian! Hugs to Finney! And please.......PICTURES!! Can't wait to go check out Remus, Dog of the Month!

    Finny's brother was adopted today

As I was reading this site, my "candygram" (email) rang. It was JennyG from HUA telling me that my neighbors did indeed take Remus home. I'm so thrilled. I can't wait to talk with them. It took Finny several weeks and the discovery of the "comfort harness" before he was comfortable on a walk. I imagine his brother, Remus, will have similiar problems. We fear they were abused with belts/leashes before being abandoned in the countryside. Finny's great now but was very timid in the beginning. I spent the first 5 nights with him on the family room sectional and that was a great experience for he and I to bond. (husband wasn't thrilled-lol) Looking forward to playdates with Remus.....I wonder what they'll name him?!?! Finny was "Romulus" at HUA. Where DO they get these names? lol
