Help!!

I need advice on what to do with the cats when we go to bed...
there are two problems here: 1 - they run around very loudly and keep up awake 2 - we have someone living underneath us! As soon as it turns midnight .. they go nuts! chasing each other around the house and making a lot of noise. I tried putting Lily in her own room but then Toby keeps us up by continuously meowing and scratching at the door .. we can't confine them both to one room because Toby hates being barred in a room. ARGHH!! The past 4 nights we haven't had a good sleep .. most of all, I'm worried because soon there will be new people living underneath us and I'm worried about them saying something to the landlord .. any suggestions??

Hi Johanna,

I am glad to read that Lily and Toby are getting along together and playing (even if it is in the wee hours of the morning ).

The one thing that people have suggested on this site (but I have never tried), is to feed the cats just before you go to bed. That way they are sleepy and less interested in playing all night.

Thnx They are starting to follow each other around, sleep together occasionally, and they do lots of wrestling.

hmm...i usually have dry food left out most of the time for them. Maybe I can give them dry at morning then at night again. =/

I do the *going to bed* pretend like so Bastet gets all her running around done before I am trying to sleep. She also gets fed about 10 minutes before I hit the snoozey button so the only interruption i get is her making herself a little bed and purring and licking herself clean.

My guys usually take the cue and settle down once they have played themselves out! Right now the living arrangement is rather odd in my place, moving Juni from one side of the house to the other, at night.

I would play with them early in the evening then feed them a big snack, drink a large goblet of wine and then go to bed!

They are probably still thrilled having each other to play with and once the novelty wears off, they will settle down.

Juni and Ti can create great havoc in the middle of the night! I do sometimes give Juni the "bedroom boot" and put her in the other side of the house.

All of my neighbors have cats - and cats with worse behavior than mine. One cat howls at his owner's door step to be let in and out! Drives us all crazy as our houses are close on some sides of the properties!

You may want to buy your neighbors downstairs a little gift from the kitties, just in case they too are not getting a good night's sleep!

Hang in there! They will settle down soon, I promise.

We don't sleep either.

We shut the Living room/hall door at night.

So some cats choose to sleep downstairs and leave early to go play outside via cat flap.

The others cats have the stairs, spare room, bathroom our room to sleep in.
The kits NEED to be upstairs and usually George joins them.

George just goes to sleep straight away but the moment the lights are turned off, the kits go insane.

They run around the bed, jump on us and run up and down the stairs.

Well they'll calm down once they get older and we'll probually miss it then.

it wouldn't be as bad if there weren't people living under us .. its really easy to hear noise there =/ Last thing I want is the landlord telling us we can't have cats ..

Some evenings my cats play more than others. I have seen them run and play ONLY after I go to bed. Other times, they will all settle down to sleep when I lay down. Since I opened up the basment of this house to them, there hasn't been the rollicking chase and ambush games going on when I retire for the night. All of the 9 kittens sleep with me on the covers. I wouldn't worry about your kitties keeping you and your neighbors awake for days on end, as this sort of evening playing usually only lasts but for a day or two. I agree, that it is probably the novelty of Lilly and Toby having each other to play with but such behavior can be disconcerting when it goes on at your bed-time. All I can recommend, like has already been suggested, is that you tire them out just before you bed down for the night and then feed them.

Thanks for the suggestions .. well I got them running about last night, and around 11:30, I gave them their meal. After that Toby got under the bed and went to sleep and Lily got on the bed with us! Then 6 am this morning they were up and at it again lol

At least they let us sleep last night

I'm so glad to hear Toby and Lily are playing together. Sorry to hear about not sleeping. Hayley and Mandy run around a lot at night as well. Thankfully they like to do most of their running around down stairs and we don't hear them.

Who drinks the goblet of wine? The cats or the humans?

When Pixel first came home from the vet's after an extended stay, she ran around all night! It only lasted a week or so, but both Scott and I were very tired and grumpy! We did our best to tire her out during the evening by chasing her around and playing with her. That worked very well!

I have to leave my bedroom door ajar with a doorstop so that my cats can come and go as they please during the night. Storm is usually pretty good at sleeping through the night but Sunny, Cirrus, and Sky have been known to be quite active and noisy at night. Sometimes I have to get up to see what all the noise is about. Luckily no one lives below me right now so hopefully they'll settle down soon. I also find that the full moon affects them too. It makes them hyperactive at night. Sometimes they're affected a week before the full moon. Oh no, I just realised that there's a full moon this Sunday night. No wonder my cats have been acting crazy during the night.

I'm so glad that Lily and Toby are getting along so well. In time they'll learn to settle down. I also make sure that mine have food to munch on during the night. Good luck.

I also have problems at nite. We try to tire them out before we go to bed. however it's hard because of our work schedule. I either work 9-5 or 2-10. My husband gets up at 5am for work and at 430am my tabby like to wake us up by head butting, meowing, and if that dosnt work he will jump on a dresser and knock items onto the floor or sometimes he will even makes himself throw up.(never on the floor always on the new carpet) So I can relate. We have had this problem for 3 years now.And no hope of solving the problem. I wish I could help you but I am in the same boat. Good Luck and be patient.Good Luck and be patient.
