    Ear Problems

I woke up one morning and she was shaking her head so much and making herself dizzy. I took her to the vet that day for a thorough checkup.

She was a little constipated - which was shortly remedied by some sardines, Her weepy eye is fine *thank goodness* She was wormed *since she had been spitting the worming medication out for hte last 2 weeks*Her heart rate was fine but her temperature was 39.1 degrees celcuis.

I then asked the vet to check her ears. He took a sample of the black wax and stained it. She had a nasty bacteria in her ears that can get through into the brain and cause menangitis!

So she is having ear drops 2 times a day for 2 weeks and then I have to take her back and get her ears rechecked and swabbed again. The vet is concerned with scarring and narrowing of the ear canal.

    BastetsMum,

MooShoo gets yeast infections in his ears every once in a while. Because he has no fur to catch the dirt, he has to go on ear drops for 30 days. Did the vet say it was a yeast infection? Do you remember the name of it??

    I hope Bastet gets better.

Poor baby! Hopefully the medication will take care of this real soon. It isn't ear mites is it?

Its a bacterial infection called menningecocle (sp) not the one humans get. There are like many strains to it. I don't know how she picked it up or even where it came from!

At least she is getting back to normal. She HATES getting ear drops though. I am hoping it doesn't reoccur.

I know that yeast infection very well. I have had to treat cats with it before and its terrible for them.

I feel like such a bad mum for not picking it up sooner.

I hope Bastet will recover soon -but to have all this infections gives you a doubt about her immune system? You will have to keep an eye on her. Tigris and Filou send headbumpies

Poor Bastet. Ear infections are no fun. But you let mom put those drops in as often as necessary and you will soon be fine.

Her immune system is fine for an abysinnian. They have low immunity anyway. She has been cleared for FIV and FLV and other nasties so its just a normal thing for her to get it (if you know what I mean).

    Poor Bastet!

I missed this one. You are not a bad Meowmie! Those ear infections are hard to spot. Pixel had one, remember? I had no idea that her general malaise and dizziness could have been caused by an ear infection (as nasty as it looked) ... they are really sneaky. I hope you and bastet get well soon!

Bastet is grumpy with me at the moment - I haven't had a smooge from her in 2 days because I still have to put drops in her ears twice a day. She is getting more proficient at hiding and when I do *scruff* her (I know its cruel but she tore up her burrito wrap ) to put them in she latches on and won't let go.

Her ears look fine but the infection is deep hence the drops twice a day for 2 weeks. She hates it!

Also they are still a little smelly - thats usually how you can tell with ear infections its just that I got so used to it that to me is was just Bastet smell

She goes back to the whitecoats on Wednesday so hopefully she will be given a clean bill of health.

    Thanks for asking

Last year I had to give eyedrops to Filou 2 weks and it is for sure that he lost confidence in that time. The good thing: it comes back soon after.

Oh but he was so good in vanishing when I even started to think anout giving him his drops

So I hope it's over soon

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Bastet's ears. Hopefully she's not mad at you anymore and the infection is clearing up by now. Can we get an uppydate on her please?
