Oz took 10 years off my life this morning...

I was drying myself off from my bath this morning. Murph had been laying next to the tub with me, when I saw him trot off to investigate something pink on the bedroom floor... Hummmm... Pink??? I went to go see what he found and there was pink dust all over the floor, then I noticed a 2 destroyed pill bottles, one for the Pepto Bismol and the other a Prescription bottle and a lil' pile of yellow pills. ARGH!!!

It had to be Oz that ate the pills, because Murph was in the bathroom with me and Maddie was still snoozing on the bed. I started running around the room in a panic, trying to get dressed, then I thought maybe I should try to get him to vomit, so I was running around looking for my Vet book. Looking... Looking... for Inducing Vomit... Not under "I" in the index... wouldn't ya know... finally found it under "Vomit, inducing of".... Said not to do induce if traqulizers are involved. I wasn't sure what the yellow pills were, cuz the label was destroyed too, but I thought they might be the ones to help Oz relax for carsickness, which sounded a lil' too close to traqulizers. So I decided against inducing vomiting. Meanwhile Oz was just calmly laying on the bed looking at me and Murph like we're nuts, cuz I'm running around the room in circles, telling Oz "Not to worry... Not to worry", while thinking, "Oh my gosh! Oh my Gosh! My baby's gonna have brain damage... Got to Hurry... Got to Hurry..." and Murph is excitedly following me. Maddie's still soundly snoozing on the bed, through all the malee.

Oh my gosh! I left the pills on the floor. Run back and pick everything up and stuff it into a plastic bag, then run and get the vacuum and get all the pepto dust up off the floor. Run to go call the vet, when I remember that I temporarily don't have phone service at home (long story involving my phone company going out of business and me parcrastinating switching to a new company). Reverse gears again and rush to the bedroom to get dressed to just take him directly to the vet. Stop and check Oz's eyes real quick. Oh gosh! they look a lil' dilated. Hurrying faster now, if that's possible, and finish dressing. Toss a confused Maddie and Murph outside.... Grab Oz and more running around, looking for his leash and collar... Start out the door, then rush back to get the bag of remaining pill debree...

Race to vet in record time... I tell'em what pills I think he took. They take him right away and start inducing vomiting. They look up his records and figure out what pill it is and how many was in the bottle, minus how many I think I've given him of that pill and figure he's only had maybe 3 or 4 of them. For a dog Oz's weight, 3 is around the maximum dosage, before he'd be OD'ing on the pills, so he should be fine... *WHEW*... Majorily groggy, but fine. He's spending the day at the vet's, so they can watch him, but he should be okay.

When I get home tonight, I'm gonna have to put all pill bottles away in the upper kitchen cabinets I guess. I'm pretty sure those pills were in my nightstand, so he must have pulled the drawer open to get them. Never had Murph or Maddie ever do anything remotely like this and Oz has never showed any interest in pill bottles before, but they are plastic and that's the one thing he does like to chew on. Should have thought about that, but didn't think he'd be pulling drawers open. Having small dogs all my life, I forget how much more access he has to things, being so big. Thank zeus, it was a lesson learned without major consequence.

    Par...

Wow--you sure know how to tell a story--I was picturing the whole thing as I read, including the snoozing Maddie--if course, I was picturing it in my house, but still.

Thank God you found the pills and took him to the vet. I'm afraid if Abbey would get ahold of something like that, she would eat everything!!!

I hope dear Oz is ok, and that you can have a relaxing day!!

Too familiar to me too, Par None!! Honey ate Imodium........and thankfully, we didn't have to have her at the vet's since we induced that vomiting right away. Thankfully, the ER vet told me exactly what to do! So glad that OZ is going to be ok!!!! 00

Wow! What a morning you had! I could picture me being in the same situation and running in circles like you were. (I run in circles when the situation isn't even a crisis! )I'm glad that Oz is going to be OK!! Boy, these pupsters sure can age us can't they? Give that naughty boy a hug from me when you bring him home.
