Thread: is Jewels overweight?

    is Jewels overweight?

Well The average maltese is about six pounds, and she is ten! lol we brought her to the vet and she said that Jewels is overweight.

Im not so sure though. When we give her a bath, her tummy does not seem very chubby at all! But compared to other malteses, it seems like she has a bigger "structer" and is longer than others also. I'm thinking that maybe why she is overweight?
do you think this could be possible?

    thanks

Dogs are kinda like people. They come in all shapes and sizes. Chester is larger than his breed standard, but I don’t think he's overweight. She looks fine to me in all the pics I've seen. If she looks and feels normal when you run your hands over her body, don’t worry. She could just be a bit large for her breed. I think I had the worlds record for smallest Westie. He was a lil itty-bitty thing.

It's hard to tell with all her pretty fur, but I've never thought she looked overweight.

Feel her sides...it shouldn't be hard to find her ribs...or extremely easy of course....

I've seen maltese of all sizes! I've seen tiny little ones, to some about schnauzer size or larger. She may just be a larger dog then most maltese.

Actually, I've also wondered the same thing about Nebo. He doesn't "look" fat to me...it's just that I've bathed quite a few huskies...2 today in fact, and both of them were like half as wide as Nebo..and one was taller then him, lol.

I think Nebo's just "built thicker" then them...more solid...but lol...what do you guys think?

amy, if i run my hands over her ribs, its not hard to find them, but not extremely easy (like you said).

thanks again, she seems ok to me!

The sheltie standard is about 20-25 lbs i think...Kai is 33. I thought he was overweight at first...I think he was just slightly but he has lost weight. I can find his ribs more easily now and his face is alot skinnier compared to pictures a month ago. It's hard to tell under all the fur though...Kai is a bit big for a sheltie though..

The breeder told us to see if their overweight, run your hand over her ribs. Then rub your hand over your knuckles (not put into a fist) If they feel kinda like that, she is a good size. I could be mixing up what she said with other stuff I heard though

Mick was the biggest of his litter. He is also a bit bigger, but in the solid kinda way Amy was describing. I also think he's a bit more over than the Sheltie standard. He's getting neuteured soon so maybe we'll get the vet to way him and find out.
