    I get my own dog!

In about a year or two (maybe sooner it depends on when my brothers move out) my mom and I are going to move into her fiancee's house. Since he already has a dog, he said it would only be fair if me and my mom each got our own dog. She is going to get a Brussels Griffon and I am thinking about getting a retired racing greyhound. I will have to think on it a little more. Anyone know f any good sites regarding retired racers? If so I would greatly appreciate it if you would post them here. Thanks!

I have 3 retiring racing greyhounds, and I love learning more about the breed on the internet. I've got alot of websites bookmarked on my computer at home, so I'll send you some of those later!
They are wonderful dogs, but the first thing we always tell interested adopters is that they can never be let off-leash (they are very fast and they love to sprint). If you don't have a fenced-in backyard, you have to walk them on leash every time they have to go potty or they need exercise. You may think this wouldn't be hard, but if the dog has diarhea and has to go outside every hour, all night, you may think differently. Ask Staci, "Shai's Mom," about not having a fenced-in yard!
I could tell you a million things about them, but I'd recommend reading "Adopting the Retired Racing Greyhound" by Cynthia Brannigan.

Banditank, congrats on looking into getting a dog! Be sure to let us know what you get! I have been thinking about a retired racing greyhound too, but am still waiting as I work so much currently. 3-greys, that is a great book! I have been trying to gather as much info as I can about the different dogs that I am interested in, and that was one of the first books I bought about greyhounds. I would like to get some insight from you about them though. I have 2 cats, so I'll definitely need one (or 2??) that is "catsafe". Did you adopt all 3 at the same time, or one at a time? What is the adjustment period like? Do you have stairs? Did you have to familiarize your dogs to stairs and sliding glass doors?? Any advice for the potential adoptive parent of an ex-racer? I probably won't get my dog until I move back to the midwest, because living out here and working and commuting just doesn't give me the time that I would want to spend with a dog. My husband and I are fairly certain that we will move back just for the fact that if we decide to have children, we will be able to survive on one salary back in the midwest. We can't do that out here...it takes both of our full time jobs to support our small house! So, I guess I have a lot of time to think about what kind to get, huh??
Bandi, some of the greyhound links that I look at include: http://www.adopt-a-greyhound.org/
This is a great website, and it include links to greyhound adoption locations statewide. If you click on the Adoption Agencies link, it will take you to a map of the US. Click on your state to find your nearest adoption agency! It will bring up a list of the adoption agencies in your state, and some will have webpages for you to look at. These will all be great resources for you Good luck and happy surfing!

I forgot to post on this last night. I can't really give you any book advice, I never bought any books like that b/c Shai is not a true track rescue, she doesn't have some of the same traits as they do. She had been adopted before I got her so she loves stairs, mirrors and windows don't phaze her. Maybe they did when she was first adopted, but I didn't have that problem. I really had no intention of getting a greyhound, when I went to the Humane Soc, I had never seen one before. I just fell in love with her eyes, they are sooooo expressive (just look at my signature)!!! She was very attached to me VERY quickly!! Jessica probably knows this better than I do, with track rescues, but I believe they bond VERY quickly. Shai had been abused I believe before she was very hand shy. But she has no fear of anyone. She loves men, children, women, Kylie (cat), she is shy around other dogs tho. She does love her cuzin Scooby. I think most greyhounds bond better with other greyhounds (just ask Jessica --- 3 greys)
With as many greyhounds that are rescued I can't understand why they are not more popular on the nat'l polls.
She thinks she is a big lapdog, whenever I sit on the floor my lap is fair game.
Do your research if you wish, whatever you decide, RESCUE ADOPT AND RESCUE!!!! I will try to find some links also and send them to you sometime. Goodluck!!!
here is a good picture of Shaianne's eyes!!!

Volunteers from a Greyhound Rescue are often at a local pet store. If I see them out front, I pull in. I can't get enough of these dogs. They are wonderful. The thing that strikes me most about them is their gentle dignity. The fact that many of them have been mistreated is unbearable.

    Staci,
You are one special Mom and Shai will be forever blessed that she has you to spend her life with. My Goodness, I looked at that close up picture of her face a minute ago and just about cried. (Ooops, I'm beginning to sound like Sandra and K9 Karen) I cry all the time! It is definitely happy tears for Shai. I know that you love her dearly. She is lovely.
